I've been trying to find just this gun for about three years. Lots of drillings out there, but not many in this potent combination.

I just received the below piece of art yesterday. It is a Sauer drilling in 12x12x9.3x74R with 26" barrels. It has a Zeiss 4x scope on a QD rail with German pointed post reticle. The shotgun chambers are 70 mm or 2.75". It patterns #4 buckshot like they are glued together and the rifle (I only shot it twice) will most probably be less than a 2 m.o.a. shooter. I'll post pictures of a target after I shoot it more this weekend.

The chokes are modified and improved. The rifle barrel has a set trigger that is set by depressing the lever on the left side of the trigger guard.

I think some francolin, sand grouse, guinea fowl and all PG from impala to eland might wish that I'd not bought it.

No rifle is all purpose for Africa, of course, but I'd hunt a leopard to an orbi with it. I don't think elephant...????? but who knows? Big Grin Big Grin

Whatcha think?

Ernest,

It boggles the mind how useful that rifle could be on any number of safaris. What could be better for a one gun safari to Cameroon for a bongo/duiker safari.

What does the rifle weigh?

Congrats Judge, just the job. CC Hunter here from AR hunted with another piece I fell in love with last year. A merkel o/u with 20ga/7x57R....what a SWEET little shooting SOB!

Hopefuly we get a chance to take yours for a dance one day. Would sure make quite an article for a magazine to do a bushveldt McNab with one gun (and a rod, although we can shoot the trout if you do not mind) Wink

Enjoy it!

I weighs less than 7 lbs without the scope, less than 8 lbs with it.

With the checkered steel butt plate, you know that you shot it. Fortunately, the pull is about 3/4" too short for my preference, so a nice leather slip on pad, perhaps with a couple of shell holders will do it just fine.

I dont know how old your drilling is but I found in mine that shot shells with plastic cups for the shot will ring the barrels out near the end.

I had to get back into reloading shot shells the old fashioned way with paper wads and paper hulls - not a bad thing actually.

Very nice Drilling. I've always wanted one in the 16/16 x 9.3x764R for myself.

Now you need a few drilling specific accessories like these -

Ernest,

I absolutely agree on the leather slip on pad. I have couple and they work great. They'll look appopriate for the rifle too.

Eight pounds with the scope is more than portable. The scope being so high would take some getting use to but I expect the whole rifle will be a new discipline all in itself.

Have fun!

Mark

I have a very good 'smith here in town who has lots of experience on old doubles and drillings. I'll take it to him and see what he suggests... just in case! Thanks for your advice!

I think I left out the picture of the doll's head:

Beautiful gun! A perfect way to make a 3-gun battery out of 2! I envy you that piece!

A question for you and the rest of the knowlegible here-

How well do scoped drillings hold zero, especially with removal and reattachment of a scope? I have tried, and have never been able to shoot a shotgun with a scope on birds, but do just fine with the slugs or nonmoving targets.

If these things work, I may well have to start looking for one.

One final important accessory is a leather scope case that slings over your shoulder. It just looks "propper". The people at drillinghotline are great and have some good gear, even if the name of the company is lacking somewhat.

Judge,

What a beautiful gun/rifle. I hunted with a double rifle drilling and a "regular" drilling for many years, though never have been to Africa. I recommend lots of practice loading/shooting/switching from shotgun to rifle/reloading/using the set trigger/putting the scope on and off. I really like the set trigger for the long shots. Have someone throw some clays and set a milk jug 100 yds out and switch it up. Hey, someone's got to do the hard work.

Yours is, IMHO, the perfect caliber/gauge combination drilling. Not nasty looking like the new ones (no offense), plenty of omph to drop big critters and large avian prey.

Must send pics of that drilling with a pile of grouse and draped over a big kudu! Congrats

Judge, as you know I am a big user of drillings and combo guns...

Your new gun is a perfect choice for Africa.

I would not hesitate to use it for all plains game, as well as lion and leopard.

Ans as you know I have killed giraffe, cape buff and elephant with a 9,3x74R.

PS ONLY one shot of 9,3 was needed for the cape buff [a soft] and one shot for the elephant [a solid of course]...
