I've never been to the SCI convention and am thinking about checking it out this year. My wife told me last night that she wants to go as well; though to date she's had no personal interest in safaris and largely puts up with my crazy ideas every now and then. Anyway, because she's going, I'd like to stay at as nice a spot as is available. Maybe if she has a good time she'll warm up to the whole safari idea and join me on a trip. Any suggestions?

Vic,

Room are sold out in a lot of Reno right now so perhaps you should start calling. I found a room at Circus Circus a couple of days ago which is a perfectly adequate hotel. Attached to Circus Circus is the Silver Legacy which is a step up. The SCI website has several recommended hotels with contact info.

...PEPPERMILL HOTEL CASINO; SILVER LEGACY RESORT CASINO; CIRCUS CIRCUS HOTEL/CASINO; jOHN ASCUAGA'S NUGGET; ELDORADO HOTEL/CASINO; HARRAH'S RENO HOTEL/CASINO; GRAND SIERRA RESORT AND CASINO. I would have included the ATLANTIS CASINO RESORT, however, they are sold out.

Good luck

Steve, I tried the Siena but as you thought, it was full.
Mark, I found a nice room at the Silver Legacy and grabbed it.
My wife now says she wouldn't mind going to Lake Tahoe for a couple of days while we're in the neighborhood. Same question...Where's a top place to stay when there?
Thanks to everyone for all the good suggestions.

I've stayed at the Silver Legacy and the Peppermill. I prefer the Silver Legacy but the Peppermill is fine. The Silver Legacy also has a spa.

I too am a first timer with wife in tow. I was able to get a room at Circus Circus at the end of last week and was happy with the price, ~$100 a night. It was better than several I found for $250 on up per night. Let me know if you book there and we'll form a Georgia contingent.

Lewis,
We'll be staying at the Silver Legacy and plan to be there for the first two days of the convention. I hope to see you and your wife there and hear a bit about your plans for Tanzania in October.

Unfortunately we're there for the last two days of the show, friday and saturday, leaving sunday. Perhaps we can wave as we pass on the way to and from the airport. I was in Tanzania this past October with Pierr'e Van Tonder and had a great hunt. This trip to Reno is to meet a guide, Mike Munsey, with whom I'm going after brown bear on Kodiak Island in 2008. We'll have to get together some other time to swap lies.

Sounds good, Lewis. I too am going to meet a guy I'll be hunting with in 2008.
I'll be leaving from the Reno airport flying to Atlanta on Sunday after a couple of days at Tahoe. I'll look for you there.

We're flying US Air flight 184 at 3:12 PM with a layover in Phoenix where we catch flight 614 at 3:45. How does that match up with y'alls schedule?
