Generally, DC or ATL or NY to JNB to Lusaka but I'm sure there are other ways.

Go to London, then directly to Lusaka - via British Airways.

Otherwise US to Amsterdam and KLM to Lusaka

BA to Heathrow then to Lusaka. No 1st class on Heathrow Lusaka leg and only three days a week.

If you are booking with mileage might be better to go Heathrow to Jo-berg and then Lusaka as there are more flights and 1 st class.

MJmines,
How long was your layover...when I looked at Emerites, it looked like a 14 hr layover. Any issues with guns?

thanks,
j

The layover going is something like 12-14 hours as you noted. You arrive in the evening and leave for Harare the next morning. By the time you clear immigration, get to the hotel, allow time to get back to the airport in the morning, etc. you get about 7-8 hours at the hotel to rest, get cleaned up, etc. Coming back, the layover is around 3 hours, time to shop in the incredible Dubai duty free area.

No issues with the guns whatsoever, clearing them in Houston was no issue, you do not claim them in Dubai and check them all the way through to Harare. I only had to show my Dubai permit in Harare before I left.

We flew JFK-JNB-Lusaka without a hitch. On the way home Livingstone-JNB-JFK. Used Steve from Travel with Guns. Rescheduled us (earlier) to avoid a hurricane. Highly recommend him.

I've worked in Zambia for the last two seasons and hunted as a client in 2010. I have been there and back from Texas four times, always flying British Airways from DFW or IAH to Heathrow, then directly to Lusaka, and taking the same route home. I have been very pleased with BA's service, including the handling of my firearms. Yes, there's an overnight in London on the way back to the States, but I find it a nice step in my return to civilization. I don't think I would ever go through JNB if I didn't have to.

You can also go with Ethopian airlines. They have a flight that leaves from Dulles everyday.
Dulles to Addia abba to Lusaka.
Saved me right at $2,000 for 2 people over the Joberg route.

I have walked in the foot prints of the elephant, listened to lion roar and met the buffalo on his turf. I shall never be the same.

Contact one of the very good travel agents that post on AR and you will be in good hands.

There are many good options to get from North America to Lusaka, Livingstone or Ndola as mentioned above. Whilst I have never done the trip from North America when I worked in Zambia we had many people come and visit us from North America and they tended to take South African Airlines flight from New York to Johannesburg (JNB) or Delta from Atlanta to JNB. These flights generally have good connections. In the end the best option will be dependent on where you are starting from and the timing of the connections. JNB is a good option to fly into the major airports of Zambia as there are many flights daily between these centers.

This last trip was my third to Lusaka and all on BA. Check your guns and luggage all the way to Lusaka from the US city where you pick up BA and just relax from that point forward.

Your warning is outdated and has been removed from the British Airways website list of rules. No 11mm restriction exists at present.
