In the past, many gunwriters have come up with ways to calculate the potential effectiveness of different calibers on game. For example, we have kinetic energy, Taylor knockout values, the penetration index and the shock power index.

However, those mathematical presentations are difficult to understand and apply in the real world. Therefore I propose a new game caliber rating system which I call the "Doggie Index".

DOGGIE INDEX

375 H&H - golden retriever (friendly and gentle)

378 weatherby - great dane (long and fast)

404 jeffery - labrador retriever (reliable and stout)

416 rigby - an overweight labrador retriever

45-70 - bulldog (looks tough but doesn't do much)

458 lott - rottweiler (tough and serious)

500 jeffery, 505 gibbs, 500 A-square - mastiff (powerful muscle)

577 & 600 nitro express - St. Bernard

585 nyati and 600 Overkill - St. Bernard on controlled substances

375 H&H:

458 LOTT:

505 GIBBS:

600 NITRO EXPRESS:

I think the 378 should be a Doberman...fast, mean looking, and "bites".

No... The 45-70 should be a cocker spaniel... gentle with low expectations.

Where is your next installment, "45-70 Sea Stories"?

Nah, the 45/70 is a Rottweiler/miniture poodle cross. Not much of a guard dog, but it's a really vicious gossip.

I think The 45-70 is best represented by a rottweiler/chihuhua mix. I actually know someone with this mix, dad's the chihuhua. Makes for one of the smallest rottweilers you've ever seen.

Sevens, old boy,
I don't s'pose there's any chance of a photo of this piratical wondah, is there? By Jove, that must have been somethin' to watch. Did the young chappie require a stool . . . ?

Oldsarge,

Sorry, but I don't have a picture. I've only seen the dog once. It was the damb funniest looking dog. Short chihuhua legs, a very big body, a black and brown rottweiler coat, and head that is way too small for it's own good. This was all equated into 15 pounds or so. One of the dumbest dogs I ever did meet, but he sure was funny to watch run around. The head was the killer, it was like putting a house cat head on a leopard. It was just too out of porportion, the whole dog was. As to how this anomaly came about, that's anyones guess. The owners of the sire didn't even know.

Dan,

Since I, aka 'retreever' own two labradors do I get to be twice as reliable and twice as stiff..

I also think you should change your post to St. Bernard AKA Cujo...

I'm not a .45-70 fan per se but to ascribe it as a lightweight is ludicrous.

Last time I checked SCI listed about 170 scorable African species. Of those the cartridge is FULLY CAPABLE on all but a handful of species such as elephant, buffalo, hippo and maybe rhino. If you bring in the rest of the world, it is probably FULLY CAPABLE for 95+% of all species.

500grains--You drew a laughter-tear on this one (my dogs are staring at me funny as I gaze into the computer screen). (Hopefully your index does not have anything to do with harming dogs, God forbid! .)

Your Doggie Index does though seem to have merit. I think the Chihuhua/Rottweiler mix (or wildcat if you will), does present intriguing possibilities. I see imaginative dog hybreds in the future inspiring new and innovative calibers. I think there is at least a publishable article idea in your new index, if not a complete reloading and/or shooting manual. .

Of the calibers you mention, I personally shoot the .378 and .416, and I think your correlations and the correlations of the others, are not far off the mark, although with some refinement you could present a unified and comprehensive Doggie Index that satisfies everyone.

Hopefully, no one will feel maligned by your Doggie Index.

700 nitro is like KERBEROS(aka cerberus) as in the 3 headed hound from hades(hell)

KERBEROS was the fierce watchdog of Haides. He was depicted as a three-headed dog with a serpent's tail, a mane of snakes, and a lion's claws.

Tonto,

I would say the 458 win mag is a boxer, predecessor to the rottweiler (lott), but can still pack a punch. Boxers are great dogs, but I'm biased, they are the only breed I've ever owned.
