New Zimbabwe List Bann

In the April issue of "The Hunting Report" by Don Causey, there is an advisory of a new hunting bann list which may include "names of prominent safari operators and perhaps their companies and/or hunting areas", which could come out in July. Of course that is the month I leave for Zimbabwe. Is there anything to this? Note that a flyer was included for SCI Travel Protection Plan for such setbacks. Was this good timing??

This info is not so easy to track down due to the leasing agreements and layers of the investors in these safari companies. What are the rest of the summer hunters planning to do?

Curious,

Dak

One more reason Zimbabwe is no longer a viable safari destination. Hell, you need a lawyer to wade through the bullshit-who's legal and who's not. Not worth it, IMHO.

The quality outfitters in Zim will steer you clear of the banned list. Probably ZATSO can too.

Terry is probably the best one to advise you on the exact definition but in the meantime:-

The US Govt produce a list (which is updated from time to time)of Zimbabwe citizens whom US citizens are not allowed to do business with and if dealt with, the US citizen can be prosecuted under the Lacy Act which I believe can result in fines, trophy confiscation and possible jail time. As far as I'm aware, the list details Zimbabweans who are or have been involved in the land grab scheme and/or human rights abuses etc........ if I'm wrong in this I'm sure someone will be able to correct me. Ganyana I'm sure will be able to tell us the Zim side of the story and Terry the US side.

Your profile has been left blank so we can't tell where in the world you're from - but if you're a US citizen it could affect you...... Frowner

I've heard lots of rumours about the Lacy act but don't know if anyone has actually been prosecuted or what the results were..... perhaps someone out there could tell us?

Thanks guys for the info and especially Shakari for an explanation of what's going on. Did contact my safari PH's and companies for their input--all favorable. Just one more hurtle for a US hunter doing a safari in Africa.

But never will let this stuff stop me from hunting in Africa, Zim or elsewhere. My hunts have been the most memorable of my life and all the people I've met along the way are the best. I didn't mean to discourage anyone, but wanted to know if this new list is a reality.

Wish everyone the best of hunting in Zimbabwe!!

Shakari:

I am from Mexico, so it probably does not affect me. In my opinion, a black list from a legitimate hunting organization like SCI would be more useful to us.

Antonio,

I'm not really the expert on this as I said. The guys who could really advise properly are Terry Carr and Ganyana - but to me a SCI blacklist just proves a particular person has done something against the SCI code of conduct.

However, (as I understand it) an American citizen doing business with the wrong person in Zimbabwe can find himself having his trophies confiscated and facing jail time and a large fine.

BUT as I also said, I don't know if this has actually happened to any individuals or companies and it could be that the US Govt are juat blowing off hot air........ What I'd like to see is an informed report from someone in the US telling us if the threats of prosecution are actually being carried out..... Personally I don't like the Zim Govt/Mad Bob regime and won't go there or send my clients there - but that's a personal opinion and it's up to individuals to make their own decision. Certainly there are some very good PHs in Zim and some very cheap hunting to be had........
