Human-Elephant Conflict Continues Oswald Shivute 7 May 2010 PEOPLE in the southern parts of the Omusati and Oshikoto regions say they are being 'terrorised' by elephants destroying their fields. Ruacana Councillor Lazarus Kor-nelius says elephants are causing havoc at Otjorute and other villages in the area. Some farmers in the area told The Namibian that they were afraid to go near their wells and boreholes because elephants had taken up position there. Kornelius said some of the elephant bulls were aggressive and the local nature conservation office had promised to shoot one of them that is considered a 'troublemaker'. According to Kornelius, the elephants escaped from the Etosha National Park long ago and are now living in southern Omusati. The Councillor of Omuntele Constituency in the Oshikoto Region, Sacky Nangula, also complained about the presence of elephants trampling crops. He said people were threatening to take the law into their own hands and shoot the elephants if Government did not get rid of them Kathi kathi@wildtravel.net 708-425-3552 "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page." | ||
