Michael RobinsonRussian Kills American Bison in South Africa
Cover photo in this month's
Safari Times shows Konstantin Popov, who seems to have killed the number two record book (not clear which book!) American bison in South Africa.
Welcome to hunting in the 21st century!
What's next?
An Indonesian kills the number two Cape buffalo in Nebraska?

larryshoresMore than one question whether that is a typo. Sure seems odd.

SaeedYou did say SCI SAFARI TIMES?
Nothing surprises me anymore as long as SCI is mentioned!

crbutlerThere are a bunch of animals farmed in RSA that are not native. I saw some bison over there once, and seen elk, auodad, and whitetail deer on offer.
I also had a chance to shoot fallow deer there, so it doesn't surprise me.
The picture on safari times didn't look anywhere near as big as a friends neighbor has in his back 40, let alone what I've seen in SD here in the states.
It's probably an Africa introduced category.
If the hunter is happy, so am I. If he wants to brag up his #2 bison, great. It's no skin off anyone else if he does.
It was a legal hunt. Let it go, guys.

L. David KeithGo to Texas for Bongo, Red Sheep, many Ibex, Rhino, Cape Buffalo etc, etc. Just about any African animal can be hunted in Texas. Not much difference, exotic hunting is big business all over the world.

Every morning the Zebra wakes up knowing it must outrun the fastest Lion if it wants to stay alive. Every morning the Lion wakes up knowing it must outrun the slowest Zebra or it will starve. It makes no difference if you are a Zebra or a Lion; when the Sun comes up in Africa, you must wake up running......

376 steyrYou know you can hunt cape buffalo on Jeff Rann's 777 ranch near Hondo, Texas. $50,000 I think is the price tag.
30 August 2017, 03:56
CrazyhorseconsultingI may be totally wrong on this, but I seem to remember being called out by someone on here concerning a high record book entry of a Musk Ox killed in Texas!
I hope I am wrong, but if not that shows how ridiculous things can get!

And I bet there are plenty of Texans(and others) who will pay it....next up will be retired circus elephants( Indian species, of course).

CrazyhorseconsultingNo, there is already a law on the books concerning Elephants, Rhinos and the Big Cats here in Texas.
This is from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Web Site.
"Canned Hunts" (Dangerous Wild Animals) No person may kill or attempt to injure a dangerous wild animal (African or Asiatic lion, tiger, leopard, cheetah, hyena, bear, elephant, wolf, or rhinoceros, or any subspecies or hybrid of these animals) that is held in captivity in this state or that is released from captivity in this state for the purpose of being killed, nor may any person conduct, promote, advertise, or assist in the hunting of a dangerous wild animal.

BushPeterYet nobody here blinks an eye when an American kills a lechwe in South Africa.
here Same thing: Foreigner kills exotic species in South Africa. A bit of measuring with double standards?

The bison on the front page of Safari Times and the bison on Kathy's link are clearly different. Why couldn't that bison been hunted South Africa? Check out Ratelfomtein:
http://www.ratelfontein.com/thehunt.html - bison is on their list.

SaeedNothing wrong with shooting any animal anywhere.
What I find so silly is that people actually want to put them in a record book.

Not so sure, Jeff. But in any case, if you're right, then there is no American bison anywhere on earth safe from Mr. Popov!
I find it odd, but I don't necessarily condemn it. For what that's worth.
After all, I have hunted red deer in Argentina. But they were unfenced and free range there, and may as well have been there forever, from the days of Pangaea.
