have a chance to get Lancaster double in .303,,regulated for 215gr. woodys @2150,,has anyone used or seen these slugs @ work on game?.I am also,,being somewhat twisted and contrary,,building a custom on a 1918 smle to be done up in the classic style of that era probably in .303 so these bullets are of particular interest.Thanxx to all.

I haved used them on hogs. also from a DR.
the RNSP 215's work just fine. All shots were
pass throughs side to side though so no idea
how they actually held together. But, dead is
dead.

I have a Watson Bros 303 and I shoot 215 grain Woodlieghs in it. They are accurate and also the only bullets of 215 grains I have found. I have only shot one deer with it and am happy with the result. The Deer was about 50 yards the bullet passed through (it was a Blacktail).

I have had very good luck with other Woodleighs in other rifles though and would not hesitate to recommend them

Arthur Neumann and Edouard Foa both had good luck with that combination (not Woody's but 215s) on a variety of African game, including dangerous game, but that was 100+ years ago. Big Grin

I have a Daniel Fraser 303 bolt rifle that shoots woodlieghs very good. I also have an Alex Henry martini sporter in 303 that I shot a nice 5 point buck with and the woodlieghs did a very nice job. I'm talking with a large reloading eqiupment firm about getting remington to make a run of 215's again so that these rifles will be a little cheaper to shoot.

Woodleighs are good buillets overall and at the low speed of 2150 fps it should be super. I have played around a bit with the 215gr in South African made Claw and Rhino bullets. They worked well but I went back to the 180gr Rhino the speed was a bit slow for me and the rhino in 180gr worked super and at the speed they basically had the same foot/pound energy anyway.
Plus it was easier to use at longer distances than the 215 grainers.

Otherwise for close/medium range you will not find fault. What I love about the 303 is it's speed it usually uses most of it's power into game unlike a 300 win that zips trough and not slamming its full power into game.

Most of the game shot with my 303 dropped to the spot except for a couple of kudu and 3 bushbuck out of 12 and 1 impala. thumb

Dont get me wrong I didnt say a 300 win was bad. The 300 is a super caliber especially used with correct bullets.

2440 fps with a 215gr, Wow wish we had the powders here to get velocity like that. I'm struggling to get over 2000 fps with 215gr Rhino bullets the claws were a bit faster in my smle though but 2350fps is posibbly the best speed ever thumb go for it. I can already see the whallop in that pig BOOM

dancingHey HUNT,I didn't think you were knocking the .300,,like I said,,I bought it 'cause it fit me,,rare for Winnys,,I want either a .338 or .375 Taylor on the action,,,it is my long range gun for predators and the 600-1000 yard steel shoots in the factory hunter class,,,I just found out that Hawk makes a good 215 and a considerable savings over the Woodys with just as good field performance,,,yea,,as a pig gun,,,,215s,,10 shots and a slick actioned SMELLY,,now thats a combination!!!!! cheers

Big1:

Does the Lancaster just shoot well with the Woodleigh 215 at 2150, or has it been re-regulated for that load? If so, it sounds like it may have been re-regulated pretty hot, and that isn't a good thing. Standard velocity of the original .303 215 grain was 2050. I'd check to make sure it is still on face.

dancingHELLO 400!,no, no re -reg. it just likes the Woodys and the slightly higher vel.s is that the barrels seem to be fast as the present owner uses the same loading that his Grand-father used for years and has been chronoed with other loadings that are known to be SPEC.,so all we can figger is fast bbl.s,thanxx for the heads up though!! beer

thumb thumbNICE STICK HUNT,,,I was thinking on the same lines as far as the stock/foreend,,with all the rain and wet conditions in the low country where the pig shooting will take place,,but the tree that is on 'OL SMLE is worn to my grip from 47 years of use(my first gun),it will take a lot of handling of the new one to get use to it!!MORE SHOOTING TIME!!YEA!!,,What mount is the glass on?I am thinking on a clifton sleeve type scout mount,,but it is pretty perm.,and besides for fast shooting in the scrub and dense lowlands,,especially with those 300 kilo boys around,, my monte'carlo lays my eye right at the sight-line with the issue irons beer

This is also my first gun got it when I was 16 years old. I have no clue what the mounts are called some South African made mounts. It is basically my pig gun and has about 100+ warthogs to its name. My favorite load for pigs which blasted most of them was 174gr Hornady interlock RN. Running at just below 2400 fps. The furstest pig shot was a dare and wasn't perfectly lot of luck involved hit the spine in the middle of the pig at 400 meters the closest I shot I pig with it was 5 meters. Had two years of good pig fun when one of my friends stayed on a farm where they planted peanuts in winter and melons in summer. Always plenty of pigs to shoot. And it was good pocket money for shoolboys selling the carcasses to the blacks in teh area.
