Jumbos trample two suspected border jumpers

Beitbridge Reporter
April 9, 2008

TWO suspected border jumpers were trampled to death by elephants in a bushy area near Nottingham Estate in Beitbridge while on their way to an illegal entry point along the Limpopo River, police said yesterday.
The police spokesperson for Matabeleland South Province, Inspector Tafanana Dzirutwe, said the incident occurred on Friday at about 8.30 pm at Matsheketsheke Village near Nottingham Estate.
“The two were part of a group of people whom we suspect intended to illegally cross into South Africa through an undesignated entry point along the Limpopo River,†he said.
“They encountered a herd of elephants, resulting in them fleeing in different directions, but the two could not escape from the elephants resulting in them being trampled to death,†he said.
The other suspected border jumpers then went to Nottingham Estate where they alerted people about the incident and a report was made to the police.
The two bodies, of a male and a female, were taken to Beitbridge District Hospital mortuary.
Insp Dzirutwe could however not release the names of the deceased saying they were yet to inform their next of kin.
“As police, we continue to urge people to desist from using undesignated entry points to cross into South Africa as they risk being attacked by wild animals and again there are also armed robbers who target border jumpers,†said the police spokesperson.

This is the seconds time in a few months that I have read that Jim Zumbo has caused such damage... I really need hooked on phonics. Wink

But on another note, I hunted Nottingham Estates in 2000. What a beautiful place that is/was. That place was stuffed with game.
