I had a couple of hunt cancellations as folks were getting jittery about the unfolding of Ukraine. What are your thoughts?

That is an overreaction if your destination is Africa.

Exactly!

We are traveling to Europe all the time and no cause for any bother.

Africa is several times safer!

This is my concern.

When you have a bully threating to use nuclear weapons many people are not going to travel. Pandemics and inflation are one thing but men are not going to leave their families and go on long distance hunting trips when there is a threat of world war. If they are required to travel for work it is different. I do not pay much attention to warnings that the state department puts out but war is a concern. Imagine how many and how long flights would be cancelled if Putin used a nuke.

If Putin uses a Nuke we will have more to worry about than hunting in exotic lands.

Agreed, however…. the likelihood of this happening, while possible, is extremely unlikely.

The United States has an exceptional nuclear deterrent that no opposing world leader can disregard, and that is our fleet of nuclear ballistic missile submarines. IIRC, each ‘boomer’ has 16 missile silos, each loaded with a ballistic missile that carries multiple nuclear warheads. I may be off, but 128 nuclear warheads per sub seems to be what I remember. Nobody, except our military, knows exactly where they are, but every opponent of the USA; Russia, China, North Korea, Iran, knows one or more of of these subs is somewhere within range of them, ready to send destruction not from another continent, but possibly from very nearby. It is a deterrent that no opposing government can ignore. The Kremlin certainly understands that there is very likely a US Boomer sitting quietly somewhere nearby like the Persian gulf or Mediterranean sea or somewhere off Scandinavia, with a response so close that they’d be a glowing ember before any ICBM could reach its target. Same goes for China, they’re certainly aware that somewhere to the east of the Chinese coast lie one or more boomers ready to respond if necessary, from very close by. That’s a deterrent to a nuclear attack no opponent can ignore.

Yes, it’s a horrible possibility, but a very unlikely one. Thankfully. With that in mind, I’m waiting to see what potential late opportunities pop up in Africa because of this turmoil, and I have a couple people looking for specific hunts I’d be interested in. If the right deal presents itself, I’m going on safari.

It is a concern to me.. I backed out of a fishing trip to Brazil THIS WEEK because of the world situation..

I'm not worried about my safety and nuclear war isn't even worth worrying over but... all I need is a major cyberattack on the airlines or power grid at home to strand me in Brazil or my kids without power for who knows how long. or for the airlines to start cancelling flights everywhere due to fuel concerns or technical problems..

So many ways they could cause major disruptions - I just worry about the family...

It was enough of concern for me to bail out and not go right now..

If you are Ukrainian/Russian/Belarusian that will be a problem but to blame the war in Ukraine if you live in any other country in the world is just an excuse for something else.

Probably every single year there's a "good" argument to not travel internationally. I went to Zim twice last year. Could I have been stuck there due to Covid testing? Yup.

Taking my 15yr old daughter to the East Cape this year, looking forward to having a spectacular time.

Hi guys.
Yes, the situation in Ukraine is still difficult, but another 1-1.5 months and we will drive the Russians out of our land, and Putin's inner circle will destroy itself!
So let's go hunting in the fall!

Cancelling a hunt thousands of miles away from a conflict is nuts.
Not choosing to hunt in Ukraine whilst it’s on I understand but anywhere else I wouldn’t worry about it. In these modern times if you have a credit card and passport you can get out of somewhere fast if needs be!

The rich Russian and Ukrainian hunters I doubt will be going anywhere for a while.

Besides the other places I would not go even before these latest hostilities (e.g., Iran, North Korea, Afghanistan, Venezuela, etc.), I would not travel these days to Poland, Latvia, Estonia, Lithuania, Moldova, Romania or Slovakia - too much volatility in transportation.

Or obviously Russia, Ukraine or Belarus, for obvious reasons.

Much of eastern Europe is unfortunately out of bounds these days owing to the actions of the new Hitler, the murderer of women and children, the psychopath, Vladimir Putin.

Anywhere else, I will go if I decide that I want to go there.

Life itself is a gamble, and the house always wins.

Are the trophy fees on Russians like most European hunting, with higher prices for Colonels and Generals.

Sounds like ya'll are getting a few Generals in the salt...

now there is a free program (meeting, transfer, accommodation, food, weapons, cartridges.) to shoot all Russians in military uniform (without a limit) Big Grin . The state pays a bonus to those who can take away from the Russians and transfer to the Ukrainian army a military helicopter or fighter (in technical good condition):
helicopter - $500,000;
fighter-$1,000,000.

Sounds like the perfect time and place for a cull hunt, there are clearly more Russians than is good for the habitat.

I've never seen this much of the world united in wishing anybody Good Hunting.
