This is a follow on to an earlier discussion about whether the .375 H&H could pack the goods to the 300 yard mark. How about the 9.3x62? Specifically what about a 286 grain Nosler Partition starting at about 2400 fps? What is its useful range?

Sparks, The 9.3x62 is as adequate for big game at 300 yards as any non-magnum cartridge with the right loads. I do not use the 286gr loading at that range because it has more drop. I much prefer the 250BT for long shots because it does not drop as much as the 286, it is a better choice for the type of game you will hunt at that range, and it is very accurate. 250BT Zero for 225yds Distance 0 100 150 200 250 300 Vel 2600 2400 2350 2260 2200 2100 Energy 3300 3050 2850 2650 2450 Drop +3" +3" +1.5 -2" -7" 286Par Zero for 200yds Distance 0 100 150 200 250 300 Vel 2400 2300 2200 2000 1900 1800 Energy 3000 2750 2500 2250 2000 Drop +3 +2.5 0 -4.5 -12 Vel is feet per second Energy in foot pounds The 286 Partition is an excellent bullet and my choice for shots on larger animals out to 250yds. I think that it or the Woodleigh are the ticket for buffalo, with an edge to the Woodleigh because it sync's well with their excellent solid. Kudude

I've got a Husky in 9.3x62 that was giving me problems with the original (non-adjustable) open sights. It was shooting 2 ft high at 100 yds. A little research and I found out the original sights in Huqvarnas were set for 300 yds in this rifle. I tried it at 300 yds and that is what they were set for. I guess the Swedes thought it could be capable at that range. Lance Lance Larson Studio lancelarsonstudio.com

I have a 9.3x64 which I load with 300gr bullets doing 2350ft/sec, so same ballistics as a 9.3x62. A while back, on the shooting range, we had drop plates up on 300m (not yards). I accepted a bet from a fellow shooter that my round nose, slow moving 9.3 bullets could not hit the 300m plate from the bench. First shot knocked it over. Now the fellow shooter tried to make it more difficult for me, and said that I will not get it right from a shooting position over shooting stcks. I managed to negotiate a 3 out of 5 likelyhood, and proceeded to shoot it 5 out of 5. I was asked to repeat it, and managed 4 out of 5 second time round. I have used it on large antilope at that range before, and it is still devastating. That is propably why I do not hold high impact velocity in a very high regard, as these bullets must have been doing less than 1800 ft/ sec, and still expanded, went through the animals, and most importatly, killed them quickly. (even blue wildebeest and gemsbok, which is, as you know notoriuosly "tough".) Just know your rifle, its trajectory, and learn to judge range accuartely, or use a rangefinder. I used my 9.3x62 on a Gemsbok at a laser ranged 275 yards in 2003. No problem there. I agree with the lighter bullet idea for longer range shooting. I load the Swift A Frame at a modest 2500 fps. Worked very well for me when I had to reach out and touch them. The limitations are there, but if you are practiced, know the rounds capabilities, and have the rigt opportunity a responsibe hunter can use this round effectively at 300 yards. ______________________ Guns are like parachutes.
