I am by no means an expert like many of these guys, but I shot a 300 WSM on plains game in RSA in July. I used factory 180 grain Nosler Partitions. I had planned on not taking an eland becuase Boddington and others said that the mininmum caliber for eland should be 375. When I got there, my guide said I could use his 375 or my gun would be fine if I could put the hole in the right spot. "Better a small hole in the right spot than a big hole in the wrong one" He actually said many people who bring bigger rifles shoot them so poorly they would be better off with a 30-06. In the end, I took a nice Eland with one shot through the shoulder. He ran 70 yards and dropped. The bullet was recovered just under the skin on the far side. It had mushroomed perfected and had lost a bit of weight, but the rear section was of course in tack. I also took 6 other animals with this load. All kills that required follow up shots were my fault. The worst one was my zebra. I miscalculed the angle of the animal. As it was quartering away slightly. The guide said to take it on the shoulder. I should have looked more closely and taken it behind the shoulder. The bullet broke the shoulder to bits and exited out the front without getting vitals. I then had to use several follow up shots to end it. I believe the load and caliber is excellent if you can put it close to where you want on the first shot. Although I put every animal I shot at, in the salt, I will try to practice at longer ranges before I go back. I believe this means much more than caliber or bullet selection. Just my opinion. | |||
