Hi gent.
Any one out there who can tell me something about the black Impala..
I am not thinking about the Angola Impala the black faced Impala
-but the color black in skin. Like the black springbok.
It seems they have some in South Africa, but I can not find pictures of the black impala.
Price is very high in live fore this impala. Who has some thing to tell me about this impala ore some pic to show???

Virtually all mammals are subject to a melanistic manifestation, like the leopard or jaguar (black panther) and even the pitch black whitetail deer posted recently here on AR. All mammals are also subject to albinism (lack of pigmentation).

Insofar as I am aware, there are no black impalas other than individuals that occassionally exhibit the trait. It is possible that some populations are more prone to it than others, but I'm nearly certain that there are none that regularly produce all-black offspring.

wisent,

Go to Blaauwkrantz Safaris website here. They have an article regarding the history of the black impala. There are several photos as well. They charge $10,000 for one ram! Here are pictures of a couple their clients have taken:

They also had a client shoot a Black Eastern Cape Kudu:

Way cool looking but not 10K cool. I would love to have one but there is no way I can justify that kind of price tag for an impala. I guess I will wait a few years untill the numbers go up and the price comes down.

Good idea, they have been putting some up for sale at the auctions in RSA so they're definitely spreading around the country and I'm sure they'll be a fraction of that price in 5 years or so.

Those are some really neat looking animals. A full mount would look great next to a Sable.

With intense selective breeding it not that uncommon anymore. They are cool looking, but it's more for the collector.

They originate from a gene pool on the Springbok Flats, not far from a town called Potgietersrust, in the Limpopo province of South Africa. I was involved in one of the first commercial sales of these Impala, as a friend purchased one ram as breeding stock for R150k..

It is a fluke of nature, and the game breeders capitalized on that. I believe that the first guy doing this is a guy called Neethling, but I'm not sure. He moved his game breeding operation from Potgietersrus to the Western cape close to Mosselbay.

They have spread over the whole of South Africa, but we are lucky to have some on one of our hunting areas, that come directly from the original animal. We are based just 60km's from this farm where they originate from. They are beautifull animals, and although I have offered them to hunt for clients, no one showed interest to shoot a (black) Impala for $9k....

It was thought at the time that American Trophy hunters would flock to shoot these animals, which has not been the case....

That Kudu looks like a lot of other Cape Kudu I have seen. Wonder if the "Turksvy Boere" got a new money spinner with their Black Kudu....Can someone tell us how much the client paid to shoot a "Black Kudu" ?

To all the Limpopo P.H.s.... Maybe we should ask more to shoot our "Blue" bulls..... Wink

I hope you are refering to your rugby team, Charl, as other regions also have blue kudu bulls. (Not the turksvy boere, mind you, except if imported, like anything else good down there... Cool)

My vote for beauty is still the common impala. I have two here on the wall and they are examples of a very impressive and representative African antelope.

I saw Black Impalas on a ranch in SA a few years ago. The owener was breeding them for hunting. If I recall correctly the odds of breeding a black inpala were 1 in 4 even if both the mother and father were both black. If only one of the breeding pair is black the odds are one in 8. Needless to say they are very rare. This guy had several running around on his farm. They are very beautiful...but very expensive.

We're going to be "gifted" with a health care plan we are forced to purchase and fined if we don't, Which purportedly covers at least ten million more people, without adding a single new doctor, but provides for 16,000 new IRS agents, written by a committee whose chairman says he doesn't understand it, passed by a Congress that didn't read it but exempted themselves from it, and signed by a President, with funding administered by a treasury chief who didn't pay his taxes, for which we'll be taxed for four years before any benefits take effect, by a government which has already bankrupted Social Security and Medicare, all to be overseen by a surgeon general who is obese, and financed by a country that's broke!!!!! Ja ag sorry Karl, I tend to forget there are other good Kudu in Namibia and Northern Cape, and then of course the 'nana boys also. Never shoot a "Blou Bul" though, But we must thingk about charging more for our "blue bulls" in the rest of the country......

You remember the housing shortage thing in Bloem......when all the Free State supporters came back to earth after the draw with the Blou Bulle.........

Sorry about my eagerness to share some knowledge on this thread, I just saw the link posted by Eland Slayer, much more informative, and at least it is in propper English Big Grin
