Riaan sent me this photo of the heart from a white rhino.

Anyone care to guess how much it weighs?

That sure is the smallest mature and adult-looking skinner I've ever seen!

Those who know: Is a Black Rhino heart weight-for-weight more or less the same as typical other large animals? I know that the true "away runners" (e.g. Red Hartebeest) have a proportionally bigger heart than a similar-sized "hider" (e.g.Nyala). But where does a black rhino heart size fit into the greater scheme of things?

In good hunting.

The 0.58% value is 95% accurate for a +/- 0.02 confidence value. Statistically it means that the value is about spot on for all mammals

Heart mass = 0.0058 body mass to the power of 0.98 ( Prothero J heart weight as function of body mass in mammals 1979 )

So by this if the rhino weighed in at 2150 kg which is the average the heart would weigh in at 12.47 kg = 27.49 pounds

Dang! Alf beat me to the post.

I teach this stuff in my university courses and before I got to the bottom and saw Alf's post I thought I would have good use of this knowledge on AR.

Heart mass, rate (and many other morphological aspects) are remarkably well-predicted by body mass.

Anybody interested should do a quick search (perhaps on Amazon.com) for Knut Schmidt-Nielsen and his books on how animals work, scaling and animals size.

Well, So far you are all high. But a couple of you all came close. The weight was measured on a scale in the skinning shed. Riaan said that it might be off by a 100 grams or so.

Keep'em coming...

Average weight of black rhino (700 to 1400 kg) = 1050 kg, according to my _The Kingdon Field Guide to African Mammals_.

But this must be a big one: 1400 kg?

Heart weight therefore: .0058 x 1400kg = 8.12 kg, emptied of blood.

8120 grams or about 17.9 lbs??? Nope, as Riodot guesses 17 lbs and that is still too high ... photography can sure make a bag of muscle look heavy ... bewildered

My SWAG: 16 pounds = 7264 grams? How close do we have to get before the answer will be revealed?

Bingo! We have a winner! Rip with a guess of 16.0.

Riaan told me it weighed 7.3 Kg or 16.094 lbs.

I would like to send you on a safari of your choice, but alas I already spent the prize winnings on my own safari. You'll have to settle for the high praise and admiration of your peers.

Close enough, eh? So that black rhino weighed about 1260 kg (or 2775 lbs) on the hoof.

Definitely sub 'minute of rhino'.

We'll have to wait for Riaan's comments on the actual animals size.

Oops, careless of me, after reading 17 lbs was too large, I did a mental flipflop to thinking of the smaller black rhino and it paid off. animal

So it was a smallish white rhino?

Kingdon gives the weight ranges by sex for the white rhino:

Female: 1400 to 2000 kg
Male: 2000 to 3600 kg

Went back and quadruple checked my e-mail and it said white rhino.

Again, not sure about it's size.

They are big beasts. Especially when you're a few yards away and they're getting irritated that you're there.

This is the very reason why bigger animals need bigger guns ( actually bigger wound volumes) to be dealt with.

Pete,
See where the aorta, vena cava, and pulmonary arteries and veins are chopped off? The bullet did that. Wink Must have been one or more adequate shots anyway.
