My son and I leave next Sunday 5/9 for Botswana, Bull Elephant and Buff, shooting a Heym 2pipe 470 Nitro My hearing is terrible with loud ringing 100% of the time. I am thinking about wearing the in the ear Walker Razor XV. Any feedback would be appreciated, never hunted with protection due to wanting to hear the PH guidance during final positioning

Ok, I will ask, the pros and cons of wearing ear protection in final stalk of DG, knowing the shooter is 66 years plus with tinnitus and hearing loss

I've been considering the same thing. My hearing is irreparably damaged from shooting. I always wore hearing protection on the phase. One, you're not going to shoot that much on safari and if you're already hard of hearing, what is the real difference. On the other hand, you don't want your hearing to get any worse and what are the cons? The one time I tried wearing hearing protection while hunting, what drove me nuts was it magnified my sounds, my movement. I sounded like a herd of buffalo busting through elephant grass. But I guess that would just make you more careful. Long story short, no downside that I see, and some definite potential upside.

Might be a LOT easier (and less distracting) with simple ten cent foamies inserted at the last minute? I have used the type with a thin plastic curved "head band" and foam on the ends. Just wear it around your neck and pull them up before the shot. Actually works pretty well. "The difference between adventure and disaster is preparation." I am down to 30% in one ear and 50% in the other. I have to wear ear protection that amplifies the sound, especially the PH's instruction on a cape buffalo hunt. The better electronic ear muffs amplify the sound a lot, and that is what I want. Also, the good ear muffs are more comfortable and fit better. I use MSA Supreme Pro-X. They were top drawer when I bought them. I recommend that you get a high end product and there are more on the market now. Yes, when wearing good ear protection with lots of amplification, your own footsteps sound like a gravel crusher, but on the up side you hear more of the birds and other bush sounds. The first day that I wore them, we were stalking a small buffalo herd on rocky ground and suddenly the whole herd took off. I was embarrassed and said to the PH, "I guess I was making too much noise, sorry." He said, "The wind changed and they just smelled us." Then he pointed to my new ear muffs and grinned. I always wear ear muffs now and have gotten used to them. The PH likes that he can just lean over close to me and whisper instructions. "Take him!" I have been using in-ear hearing protection/hearing enhancer by Axil. I had my hearing checked when I had the mold made and they programmed it according to that.

They work, but the batteries burn out fast. The clock on them starts ticking as soon as the contacts are exposed to the air. Actual use is not the only factor. Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer.
