Anyone familiar with these? The 700 I handled seemed to fit me better than any of the other bolt-actions.

They are like Bigfoot....a lot of reports of them existing, but none in captivity Big Grin....actually they are the old MK X Mauser actions. I think originally imported by Interarms and most recently Charles Daly. I think they are a fine rifle for the money. It looks like the Remington has a little nicer stock, and maybe a bit nicer finish, at least from the pictures. So far, in this part of the country, I have been unable to find one to handle.

IF we ever get to see them, I can't imagine you will think much of them.I looked at them at the SHOT Show 2006, no sales rep even offered to talk about them, ignored them entirely, these are a poor stepchild for sure.

The finish on the barrel and action was only adequate, rough but OK for a really cheap rifle.

The billboard size REMINGTON-Zastava logo plastered all down the left side seemed tacky but, again, Ok for a really cheap rifle.

The stock was the worst I've ever held, on even the cheapest rifle. A laminate which could have been very nice but was finished in a oil/flat sort of finish, needing sanding a few more times, though it appeared to be fashioned from a piece of dimension lumber from the yard, and they had not shaped it much -clunky at best.
[ finish was much like you see on many of the cheap imported military surplus rifle]

If you want one it would seem a far better idea to find one of the many Charles Daly's left orphaned in the gun shops and now at 1/2 of Remington price.

These Remington versions will only be candidates for project rifles, metal refinished and new stocks, if you can get the barreled actions cheap enough.

I saw two yesterday at the Gander Mtn in York PA. One in .30-06 and another in .270 for @$550.00.

Fit and finish looked about like normal for a mid priced US factory rifle with a laminate stock.

I'd rather have the ZASTAVA MARK-X action, than a complete Rem mod 700 rifle, at the same price!

I also handled the M798 at the Remington booth at SHOT. I also had arranged an interview with a Zastava staffer, he had some interesting information.

Zastava is making more model varaitions than Remington has shown, you can see them on Zastava's website. According to my source, some of these models will also be coming in.

I also talked to a US custom gun company who is in negotiation with Zastava to import actions.

I expect more to come, and it will be Good News for us chickens...jim

RickR, Was the stock design more of a CDL design or did it have a roll-over cheekpiece? capt david

Capt D,

It looks kinda sorta like a plywood version of the stock they previously used on the Model 7.
I think it has a slight cheekpiece, I wasn't impressed enough beyond thinking it'd make a good start given a rasp and sandpaper...
