Indeed, he was truly a legend. For decades, Gérard Pasanisi's safari companies controlled some of the best hunting grounds in Tanzania, and the best in the Selous. Bert Klineburger was his US booking agent, and introduced many Americans to Pasanisi's operation. There was a time when Holland & Holland booked for him in the UK. He never advertised, but was always fully booked. Pasanisi's camps were the best on earth, and many superb PHs staffed them, including his son, Eric, his nephew, Phillipe Lué, Frédéric Blochet, Frank Maës, Jean Louis Masson, Pierre Caravati, Luis Pedro De Sa E Mello, Frédéric Herbain, and even the equally legendary Tony Sanchez Ariño. I have never seen such vast herds of game, including big elephant and hundreds of buffalo, as we did along the Mbarangandu, Njenje and Luwegu Rivers in the southern Selous. It was almost routine to see lions and leopards in daylight! Those days are sadly gone, thanks to the USFWS and its meddling in the conservation efforts that made them possible. It was a sad day a couple of years ago when Eric Pasanisi had to give up all of the family's hunting concessions, after having been forced out of business by an unaccountable American government bureaucracy. It was more than a sad day. It was a damned shame. The hunting world is a lesser place because of it, and also because of Gérard Pasanisi's passing. Bert Klineburger used to tell stories about Gérard shooting wounded leopards with his .45 caliber Model 1911 pistol right off the hood of his Land Rover, and even off of his trackers! His like will not be seen again. RIP. Mike Wilderness is my cathedral, and hunting is my prayer. | |||
