Federal's "new" bullet

After discovering Federal Cartridge Co., had decided to drop my favorite load (.280 cal-160gr-Nosler Accubond) due to slow sales, I immediately contacted them. My guess is ATK (parent owner of Federal) doesn't own Nosler. I believe they do own Speer however. 2 + 2 makes more sense to me: sell yer own stuff! But the good news may be a new bullet: the Trophy Bonded Tipped. Here's the official release:

ANOKA, Minn. â€“ January 1, 2008 â€“ Federal PremiumÂ® has combined the latest in bullet technology with proven performance to bring big game hunters the Trophy BondedÂ® Tip. This new offering is built on the heralded Trophy BondedÂ® Bear ClawÂ® platform and adds numerous features for a substantial increase in performanceâ€”available summer 2008.

The first and most noticeable addition is a neon, translucent polymer tip. This is coupled with a boat-tail design for flat trajectory and improved accuracy. Because itâ€™s built on the Bear Clawâ€™s proven platform, the new Trophy Tip has the jacket bonded to the core for high weight retention and a solid copper shank to crush bone. â€œWe wanted to really raise the bar for bullet performance with the new Trophy Bonded Tip,â€ said project lead Larry Head. â€œSo we worked very hard to develop a bullet that had it all. The result is an accurate, flat-shooting and tough bullet that meets all the demands of todayâ€™s big game hunter.â€

The Trophy Tip is unique in that it combines several different bullet technologies in one projectile. Another improvement to this bullet is exterior skiving on the nickel-plated bullet that provides optimum expansion at a variety of ranges. The load also features a nickel plated case and bullet for easy extraction and corrosion protection. Available in a full-line of offerings for 2008.

I don't know if there are other manufacturers doing this, but RWS/Brenneke have been nickel plating their TIG bullets for years. I can't tell you if it has an effect on barrel wear, but at least it is a well known technique.

I like tipped bullets, they give you the best of both worlds, easy set up and in this case a mechanical stop for expansion

Some 338's would be handy though

In the 308 my wife and I have used the old Federal factory 165 Trophy Bonded Beaclaw quite a bit.
It is my favorite bullet in the 308.
We have taken game from bobcat, coyote and turkeys, deer, impala, to big pigs, zebra, wildebest, honey badger and heyena.

In all cases it has performed perfectlt giving good kills and because the bullet is bonded deep penetration AND it does not mess up the hide on the small stuff.

I have used the 200 gr Federal factory TB [again the old style] in my 300 Win Mag on 2 elk and a couple of red fox, again with perfect performance.

If this new bullet performes on game as well as the old bullet it just might be the best bullet avialable, all things considered.

Nickel is very brittle for a bullet jacket.

The old RWS nickel solids split like crazy.

The new Trophy Bonded Speer uses gilding metal rather than pure copper like the original Jack Carter design, and has substantilly reduced frontal area and weight retention in the 458 caliber I tested.

Main advantage to this new design is that with a polycarbon tip you can have a large HP that is still streamlined. Which should help increase long range expansion.

I was very happy w the original HE 165 grain .308 Federal TBBC. My brother made 5 one shot kills with it on PG including zebra and kudu.

I agree. How can they call it a "big game" bullet and stop short of the 338?

I've used them in a .300 Win. Mag. on elk and in my .300 WSM on a sheep hunt (no sheep). They were very accurate in all the guns I've tried them in. I shot the elk on the shoulder at a step or two shy of 300 yards. The bullet exited the off shoulder and destroyed everything in its wake. I look forward to testing them in Africa this season.

Ten years and -- I'm still taking ol' Greg's advice. Sure do miss him, and will think of the Rodriguez family working loads up with 160-grain .284 TBT's when I rebarrel to 7mm Weatherby Mag. (He was still going strong until March 2013.) His advice on TSX's accounted for success with Pamela's .270 Wby Mag at Diedrick's African Safaris and with my .300 H&H at Blaauwkrantz Safaris in 2007.
