Anyone had any experience with the Hornaday solids in 470 regarding performance?

Thanks

I used hornady soft and solids in 450 NE. On Cape buffalo. The solids went through and none were recovered.

I have not had any problems with them

They are fine in rifles that are not too fast.

I have seen them become like bananas.

I think 2400 FPS or less should be no problem.

Using the Hornady DGS solids in my .404 Jeffery, I got a complete pass through on a side brain shot on a bull elephant in 2009 with Martin Pieters in the Omay.

Not in .470 but in my .450 no2 the 500 grain solids worked fine on cape buffalo, giraffe, and grizzly.

I've been shooting them in both my 450-400 and 375 Flanged, as that is what Butch Searcy has hand loaded for me. Never had a problem. I know that is not the 470. In my 470 I shoot Federal Trophy Bondeds and Sledgehammers. No problems there either. Big Grin

I don't have much Dangerous Game experience, just some cape buffalo. Using single shots for my big bore rifles means that I am especially focused on my first shot. I use Cutting Edge Bullets and Peregrine BushMaster bullets in 500 and 577NE. I have had 6, one shot kills, 4 of them DRT. I get close and take the heart/lung shot. ( Next buffalo hunt I may try the spine/scapula shot if I get a good opportunity.)

I know that the Hornady solid is very popular with experienced hunters as above, however I like a solid with a wide flat meplat like CEB, NorthFork, etc.
They have deep straight penetration and leave a big wound channel.
With the pressure limitations of my break open rifles I run lower velocities than most hunters do. I have come to believe that with big bores, the velocity is not necessarily the most significant factor.

No 470 here, unfortunately.

I've used 500gr Hornday DGS in my Lott and 450 Dakota, between 2170-2280fps for:

Backing shots on a few cape buffalo & a dozen Aussie buffalo.
Brain shot 2 ele.
Heart/lung 2 ele.
Body shot a hippo on land 4 times & recovered all 4. 3 of those really look like they could be reloaded & used again, 4th hit the spine & bent a bit.

I have been very happy with them & trust the bullets to do their job. Recently picked up some 500gr and 550gr Woodleigh .458 solids & I'm looking forward to trying those as well.

We were hunting elephants in Zimbabwe.

We saw a bull walking, and we ran parallel to him to get closer.

As we got close enough for a shot, he turned to face us.

We have already agreed I will go for a frontal brain shot, and Roy would fire for his chest at the same time.

We fired and the elephant dropped.

Stone dead.

I was using my 375/404 with Barnes Super Solids in bronze.

Roy was using a 460 Weatherby with Hornady FMJ.

He had to shoot through the trunk.

We found that the bullet changed direction 90 degrees in the trunk, went out from the side of it, never touching the elephant!

We all laughed at this, which was supposed to be an insurance shot!

I'm thinking Saeed's story was quite a few years back and Roy may have been shooting the old Hornady steal jacket solid. The newer Hornady bullet is quite a different design.

Frankly, I feel there are better choices.

If you want to use a traditional design, I’d go with Woodleighs because they haven’t played games with modifying their bullets and not telling folks- hornady has in the past.

I feel the monometal flat meplat designs are overall a superior option- whether the woodleigh hydro, Swift, CEB, Barnes, Northfork or whatever are better.

I’ve shot 5 ele with NF solids. Other than availability, I see no reason to change.

Yes.

It was quite a few years back.

But, with modern bullets, I would use copper only.
