If you wanted to take a Nyala with whom would you hunt?

Web-site would be great.

I also will be looking for an Nyala hunt most likely in 2008. Why are Cape Buffalo trophy fees soooooooo high in South Africa? bewildered

There is a two part answer to this question. 1. The supply is very limited due to lack of large concessions such as those found in Zim and elsewhere (the parks in SA are fenced to keep the beasts out of settled areas around the parks), and further due to restrictions on relocation of buffalo to curb the spread of disease.
2. There are enough folks willing to pay $10K to shoot a buffalo in SA to soak up the limited supply, partly due to the convenience factor (the plane stops there first), partly due to the much lower daily rates in SA, and partly due to the fact that you don't have to spend $3K chartering a private plane to fly you into camp.

When you add up the total cost of the hunt, including international airfares, connections, charters, daily rates, and trophy fees, you will be surprised to find that SA is not a whole lot more expensive than Zim or Mozambique, esp. if you are planning to take a few species of plains game as well.

On the subject of Nyala, I believe we have one of the best bets in RSA both in terms of horn for the money, and in terms of hunt quality/ambience. Clients have taken several around the 30" mark the last two seasons from this property. Tne world record was taken a few years back from an adjoining property. See website for details. (Go somewhere else if you want to shoot one off the truck though.)

Personally I believe Mkuze Game Reserve in RSA is the best bet for a big nyala. There are lots of them there in a very natural setting of 50,000 acres. 30" is definitely possible there. As for a safari company I think it would be hard to beat Garry Kelly's outfit. He has 36 years in the business in RSA. I have hunted with Garry as well as two of his sons and can highly recommend them for anything in South Africa.

While it was a decade ago, Trevor Shaw and Zulu Nyala did a splendid job for me. 29 7/8, handgun.

I had a great hunt with Chris Troskie earlier this year and can recommend him (if you can get in with him). From what I know he has a great place for nyala in Natal.

Mozambique has some serious Nyala and arguably some of the last remaining truly free-ranging Nyala populations anywhere. We do not even consider bulls under 28"

THANK YOU RUSS!!!!

I can say that there are much more quality Buff around than one would let to be believed. We have about 30 Bulls available next year, and that is only one company. The trophy fees stay high due to other reasons mentioned by Russ.
Day fees at $500.00, no government license, no extra "tribal levies", no charter flights, two hours from airport.

Only draw back is that you will be hunting on a fenced property, but most of the places that have Buff are 7000acres or bigger.....

I have tried to press this point more than once, when you do the math, it is not THAT much more expensive.....

I will say that I can give you a 95% change of hunting a good Nyala (28"+). A few bulls spotted this season are close to 30"...

It's a pleasure Infinito but man your kudu and nyala prices are pretty steep. We do trophy nyala in KZN for $300 daily plus $1750 trophy fee, and the quality of the hunt as well as the trophies is top notch.

I second the recommendation made by Russ. I hunted with the outfitter he is speaking about in 2004. I saw one nyala while at camp that was pushing 31". Hunted for him but never found him again. Passed up plenty in the 27-28" range looking for the ellusive 30" nyala. Also, plenty of red duiker and buskbuck in the same areas you'll be hunting the nyala.

Very nice camp and I can't say enough good things about the outfitter. Be sure and bring your hiking boots though!!

Graybird is right. Go with Russ' people in KZN. But, you must want to hunt on foot and spend the hours hunting. Was there in August of this year. Plan to go back for duiker and reedbuck.

I know Russ, the price we have to pay for Nyala not being in Natal....you know how it goes. We have very good trophies at those prices mind you.

Just a word on the Kudu. You might want to know about this, but the word is going around in SA that Big Kudu Bulls are going to get VERY expensive in the next 10 years. The reason is that every guy wants to shoot a 55" plus Kudu.

The Kudu we hunt is from the Steenkampsberg mountain range. The name Lydenburg rings any bells? We are not far from there. The Kudu in this area are EXEPTIONAL trophy quality. The testament for this is the 3 top 10 Kudu on Rowland Ward coming from this area, and one of them is the "numero uno" of hunted animals(not talking about the opick up in Moz). Two from Lydenburg and one form Marble-Hall. This good gene pool results in most of the Kudu taken every year are in the 55-58" class. The result is DEMAND....

So, you are more than welcome to hunt the Eastern Cape Kudu for $800-1000, and you will get plenty of good Kudu around the 50" mark else where in SA for $1300-1500.00, but the Big boys are in the mountains with us.....

In saying ALL that, we are competing with Natal for that top spot on the Kudu, as they take the same kind of trophies each year, just a pitty they do not feature in the "book".... Big Grin

I saw your posting of the brace of Kudu, I'll show you mine in an e-mail, from this season!

Thanks for the advise though, it is taken at heart!

Cheers
