Fantastic ivory and pictures! 68 is excellent and 77 just plain amazing these days.

That southern Zim ivory is pretty but also thick and heavy (I would have guessed less looking at your bull, based on my experience in the Valley and elsewhere).

Congratulations to you and Zambezi Hunters!

I dont know how it is in other areas but i only saw one bull with a worn down/broken tip over there ?! And that one we estimated to be over 90Lbs (i have him on film) and as you can see on the pictures above all of them are perfectly curved.
On my bull you could hardly see wich one that was the working tusk and he was 40+ years old. On the left tusk he had a "grass notch" that was all.

Anton,

That bull gets better each time I read about it. 77x68 is a fantastic bull. Why would anyone think you have to book Botswana to find big ivory? We book elephant everywhere they are huntable and I in good conscience can't tell any client that he will kill a better elephant particularly for the money anywhere other than in Zim.

Good looking ivory and great shooting sequence. I have not hunted elephants yet but I have a question. When they fall like that with the head hitting last on the tusks, is it possible for the them to break?

Congratulations. The footage is awesome and its a great trophy. Although it does pull at the heart to see the death of a giant especially in slow motion. I guess it is a twinge we hunters feel. Which goes back to the Q a lot of non hunters ask, how can you kill an animal and still love animals! I confess I don't know the answer!

p.s. In a few months all being well I will be hunting elephant myself and am looking forward to it.

How far was the shot and what were you shooting? The photo might be deceiving, but it appears to be a good distance (60 yards or something), if so that was an incredible shot as well as an incredible bull.

Does anyone know if this is the area that Dudley Rogers used to have in Mehenye?

It is Mahenye, the same area that Dudley Rogers used to hunt.

I were shooting a borrowed Winchester 416 Rem and the distance was around 50meters. It was like 15 minutes after the sun had settled and he was going into some thick stuff. (It was to shot him right there or let him go) actually after the shot when we walked up to him it was to little light to take trophy photos, we did that the morning after.

When i first decided to hunt ele i wanted to do it up close with open sights but after seeing this elephant i felt lucky that we had a rifle with a scope also. Im looking into a forest elephant hunt in Cameroon so maybe i get my share "up close" soon.

First shot was just behind his earhole and the other two was from the same distance just after.

I hunted elephant with Dudley's company in 2006 in the Gokwe area. When we weren't finding any big ivory we seriously toyed with moving to Mehenye (about a 9 hour drive as I understand it). We abandoned the thought when we were informed by the camp staff there that the largest bull they'd seen in several days was a 45 pounder. Still, reports like this one make me wish I would have gone.

Bwana,

I don't know what time of year you were referring to but it seems that Mahenye comes into its own late in the season. Our clients including Anton took 3 of the bulls killed there in'08 and they all were beauts.

Anton,
That Elephant is first class!

Just read T.V Bulpins book 'The Ivory Trail' about the notorious poacher Bvekenya, who hunted in the same area as you hunted -but close to 100 years ago, however he never shoot Dhlulamithi, you might have shoot one of his grand children...

Mark, that's what I understand. I was there in June. I suppose that's why I wasn't booked into Mehenye in the first place. In the end, I was looking for a 50 pounder and came home without one (turning down a 45# - probably a mistake). I was taking to Jumbo Moore at SCI two years ago and he said he had the area just north of this Mehenye area, but said the Mehenye concession was a real gem. Does anyone know if Jumbo still has his concession?

Anton,

Thought you might be interested in the final ivory weighs from Mahenye. Just got a couple of days ago an e-mail from Alistair Pole of Zambesi Hunters with the weights. The short fat one s are an amazing 76x76.

Mark

Hi Mark, Sorry for the slow response but I wanted to get the ivory properly weighed. The details are as follows from centre ivory (Antons) going out

1. Anton Dahlgren - 77 & 68 lbs

2. Mike Streetman - 58 & 56 lbs

3. Mike Streetman - 52 & 56 lbs

4. Ron Dozeman - 76 & 76 lbs

5. David Risher - 52 & 48 lbs

This gives an average over the 10 tusks of 61 lbs for the year and they didn’t even shoot the biggest elephants seen!

What we have learned from this year is that the elephant hunting there is good all year round and there is no specific time to come.

Let me know if you need any other info.

Best

Alistair
