Nice Rheebok trophy! I want one of those someday! I agree on the taxidermists... surprised you don't use a RSA taxidermist as they would be more familiar with indigenous species peculiarities.

Very nice rhebok Alf clap
Was this your first ? If so you had some very good beginners luck.

I don't think the animal is on my list to hunt yet but when an opportunity will come round I'm sure I won't hesitate. Will just need to make a plan on a rifle as I don't have anything light and fast though.

But I see what you mean on the nose does the mountain reedbuck show the same characteristic ? I cannot remember if I have ever looked at the nose close by like that.

That is a beaut. You are 100% right about taxidermy....the real quality is in the little details.

Cheers,
Canuck

Alf,

Magnificent rhebok! I'm making a second try in a couple of weeks for one with Garry Kelly. Thanks for the tip on the nose. I'll remember it when I get mine mounted if I'm lucky.

A magnificent vaal, Alf. And quite a timely post as I hope to have my cape/horns for one arriving here in the states in about a month. Many thanks for the excellent reference photos!

With vaal, I noticed something else when I was perusing the taxidermy supply catalogs for commercially available forms. Is it just me, or do most forms not have the correct head position in comparison to the neck? With all of the vaal that I saw, it seemed they had a more "chin tucked down" position, like the little dude in the photo below, than other plains game animals;

Excellent trophy! And great photos as well. I wish more hunters would take photos like these and I appreciate your attention to the unique anatomy of this animal.

As for the above statement:

In most cases I have not found this to be true. There are plenty of award winning mounts out there of animals the taxidermist may have never seen in the wild, and there is plenty of "junk" put together by taxidermists who see the animals all the time but never really look at them and study the details. It sounds like it should be true but where you live says little about the quality of the work.
