Is there any hunting in Madagascar? My daughter and I will be hunting with a PH in South Africa in September. We will be in Africa for a month and were looking for the possibility of a tag along hunt somewhere after we hunt RSA. Would Madagascar be a hunting destination???

at the moment there is a coup on the go there so not sure it is a place you would like to go to.

A regional body may suspend Madagascar's membership following the ousting of former President Marc Ravalomanana by troops loyal to Andry Rajoelina, who was installed Wednesday as the country's acting president.

The military-backed takeover in Madagascar has raised fears of a return to military rule across Africa, following recent coups in Guinea, Mauritania, and Guinea-Bissau. The United States and European Union have threatened to cut off aid to Madagascar, one of the world's poorest countries. Zambia, a key member of the 15-nation South African Development Community (SADC), has called for the immediate suspension of Madagascar from the grouping and from the larger African Union. SADC leaders are meeting Thursday in the capital of Swaziland to consider the call.

I would not go there as boerbokrib said, why not try Mauritius - i went there on Honeymoon last year, also caught a black marlin, tried to go hunting there but my new wife drew the line at that. Plenty to do - your daughter should love it.

Mauritius is a fine idea. Write to my buddy PH Thierry Labat about Mauritius. His parents live there and he knows everything about the place. Excellent fishing and I understand plainsgame hunting as well.

MADAGASCAR

March 17, 2009

The State Department warns U. S. citizens of the risks of traveling to Madagascar, and recommends against travel to Madagascar because of escalating civil unrest. This replaces the Madagascar Travel Warning of March 16, 2009, to inform Americans that the Department of State has ordered the departure of non-emergency personnel and all family members.

Since January 2009, Madagascar has been experiencing escalating political demonstrations including violent clashes. While the immediate causes of the political crisis in Madagascar are between government forces and supporters of the former mayor of Antananarivo, there have been regular demonstrations and clashes with security forces in most provincial capitals and other population centers around the country. Residences and businesses have been looted and burned. While American citizens have not been targeted to date, the Department of State has ordered the departure of non-emergency personnel and family members at the U.S. Embassy in Antananarivo due to the ongoing unrest and security concerns. The Peace Corps Director has approved an evacuation and temporary suspension of the Peace Corps program in Madagascar. The Department of State warns U.S. citizens against non-essential travel to Madagascar at this time. American citizens already in Madagascar should carefully consider the dangers of remaining. Those who do choose to remain despite this warning should continue to maintain a high level of vigilance and a low profile.

I've been watching the situation in Madagascar for awhile. My church was/is planning a trip there next year. Right now, we're just waiting to see if/when things stabilize.

Not about Madagascar but I took the time to see what that web page says about my country and I find it very funny rotflmo

"The car's windows must not be open more than an inch", and better, "stay away of the remote areas of the country" !!!!

In the remote parts of my country people will offer you a bed and a meal for free..

The only dangerous situation you will find is if you mess with the farmer's wife or daughter Big Grin

I lived in Madagascar for three years in the nineties. There is no big game there. I shot at some ducks a few times but, at that time, there was no outfitter operating for visiting hunters. Right now is definitely not the time to visit, it's a mess.

There are some exotic (ie imported) stags you can shoot in Mauritius for more than it's probably worth. Fishing there is pretty good however.

I lived in Madagascar during the late 70's/early 80's. The only large animal native to the country is/was the fossa, a cougar-sized carnivore that hangs out up in the trees eating lemurs, etc. Last I heard there weren't very many left. Most of the animals in Madagascar are found nowhere else, so they're not too keen on hunting them. There may be some bird or waterfowl hunting and there is some decent offshore fishing.....but with the current instability it's not a very good place to travel to right now.

Johannesburg - Madagascar's deposed president Marc Ravalomanana has based himself in South Africa, from where he travelled to Swaziland for meetings this week over his ouster from office, a Swazi official said on Wednesday.

Swazi King Mswati III currently chairs the security organ or troika of the Southern African Development Community, of which the Indian Ocean island of Madagascar is a member.

SADC leaders are meeting in the Swazi capital, Mbabane, on Monday to discuss ex-opposition leader Andry Rajoelina's bloodless rout of Ravalomanana last week, including possible sanctions.

"The first point of stop was South Africa, where he's presently staying, but while he was in South Africa, he made contact with ourselves in the chair of the troika," the official told South Africa's SAfm public radio.

Ravalomanana has been in the mountain kingdom that is enclosed by South Africa and Mozambique since Monday, Swaziland says.

SADC has condemned Rajoelina's arrival to power as "unconstitutional" and is refusing to recognise him as interim president, as is much of the international community. The African Union has suspended Madagascar's membership.

SADC last week dispatched a delegation to the island for talks.

As suggested try Mauritius. Beautiful accommodations, great hunting for Rusa stag and super marlin fishing. It all can be done from one lodge.

Yes, I would choose Mauritius, the Maldives, Zanzibar or another of the Spice Islands, but NOT Madagascar.

Wendell, I'm just about ready to pull the trigger on this one. However, can you assure me that THIS trophy shipment WILL NOT arrive on my doorstep?

You wouldn't do that. I know you will only hunt species that are native to the particular area! Don't start making exceptions now!
