Jerry,

The waterbuck available on Coutada 10 with Bahati are absolutely amazing. Anybody who can put in a litte time should take a very big one. I shot a 29.5" out of a herd of 34 big bulls and saw hundreds. The kicker is that they say there is a better place that we could not get into.

How big is the one in the pix? I believe they've killed 34" there.

What makes me really happy is the condition of the hides & horns when you receive it. We really take pride in that and put a lot of effort in to ensure quality. Normally no news is good news, but to actually hear that it worked out as planned is really satifying.

Thank you!

You wont have to guess which waterbuck, even though the others are LARGE as well.

Just don't try to eat it. Best left for the resident carnivores.

John,

Is the statement about palatability of a waterbuck from personal experience or African lore? They say they all stink also but my bull taken with Bahati my third waterbuck bull had no obnoxious odor at all.

You are quite correct. It is largely a myth and most people that tell the story have never tried, smelled or tasted Waterbuck meat. The skin and coat of a waterbuck is impregnated with a greasy secretion from two glands on the neck and two around the anus. This substance helps with water-proofing the animal and has been described as smelly. (I would rather call it a Waterbuck specific scent.) It is said that one should keep the hair & outside of the skin from contacting the meat or all sorts of bad things will happen, making the meat this & that. At best, it may end up up with a bit of a musky smell and nothing major. It has a grainy meat with very average taste, not my favourite by a long shot. The trackers eat without reserve, skin or no skin contact. They have probably not heard about the bad smell theory!

I also read somewhere that this scent will prevent crocodiles from attacking Waterbuck. May be, but since I've seen crocs dig in on some the worst, rotten stuff that this planet can produce, I find that hard to believe!

I shot a 33" waterbuck in the limpopo about 6 years ago. I had heard the same thing about the meat. The PH said as long as you don't touch the meat after handling hide or hair they are good eating. We ate the backstraps and everyone thought it was good eating.

Just finished mounting a 32 1'2" waterbuck from the Bubyi Conservancy. The thing is an absolute beast. I hunted for a 35" but never laid eyes on it, found out the buck was killed about a month later. Can't imagine what it looked like on the hoof!!!
