For those of you that enjoy wingshooting, don't miss the opportunity to hunt sand grouse in Southern Africa starting in September. The dry areas of Namibia and Botswana are the hotspots for Sand Grouse, as well as Francolin, Guinea Fowl, and Dove.

Shooting is generally done over waterholes, much like shooting mallards. There is a specific time each day, usually between 8 and 10 in the morning (depends on the species) when the sand grouse come in from all quarters to water. The arrive in small and large groups and shooting is fast and furious. A 12 or 20 ga gun with no. 6 or 71/2 shot is ideal, IC and Modified being all the choke needed.

When combined with some Guinea Fowl and Dove shooting, and possibly quail depending on the area, it is worth making the trip for birds alone. Of course, it's not too late in the season for plains or dangerous game hunting in combination with wingshooting. Most hunters actually prefer the late season for buffalo and elephant, as the visibility is good and the game concentrated around water.

Remember, South Africa does not allow semi-auto or pump shotguns, and the airlines only permit 5kg (11 lb) of ammo in checked luggage, so it's best to arrange with your PH to have some ammo available for you. ALso, you won't find 16 and 28 ga ammo easily in Africa, so stick to 12 or possibly 20 ga.

For those looking for a destination, we have an outstanding property just north of Windhoek where we are offering a special introductory rate for wingshooters (this fall is the first season the birds will be hunted to any degree), with discounts for groups. See our website for details.

No dogs necessary, for sand grouse. The waterhole is the magnet. Dog is not useful for doves either, nor for guinea fowl (they are runners and the only way to hunt them is the spot and rush method, the "Natal Surround", or with beaters). For Francolin, dogs are useful but that season closes before the grouse season opens.
