As with the Botswana lion hunts, does anyone know if any Black Rhino have been taken yet?

I can't remember if this was on hold or not.

Africa being Africa, do local politicians have the first crack at them, or have they been taking them all along?

Thanks

Minkman

The info I have is that you can hunt them in Namibie and South Africa. They are very expensive and I have not heard of any taken.
Anyone with info please help.

In general most African politicians don't hunt so you should be able to get one off five black rhino permits if you have a very big bank ballance.

The 5 permits for Black Rhino in South Africa have been allocated. The Limpopo Province received one, The North West Province one, Mpumalanga Province two and the Free state province one. These Black Rhino as far as I am aware all belong to private individuals and not the state. I have not heard when the hunts will take place. My province Kwazulu Natal currently the main breeding area for Black Rhino did not submit an application to hunt this season. Hopefully this will change next year.

Thanks Guy's!

Dries, Sorry about my assumption regarding the permits. When these hunts first came up, I figured that the State would use them to garner political favor. mea culpa.

Could you please post anything you think interesting about these hunts.

Thanks

Minkman

Hi Minkman,

Not a problem, being closely involved with Black rinho I have waited for some time to see the hunting legislation passed. The numbers of black rhino at present exceed the number of white Rhino when hunting on white Rhino started. I attended the debate in Pietermaritzburg and the hunting of Black Rhino still remains a contenscious issue. If anything of interest occurs I will keep you updated.

I have heard that the going price on a hunt for black rhino is around 250K. Of course, black or white, they're expensive depending on horn length, etc.

Two friends of mine from our little town here in Georgia are each going rhino hunting this year. I have no idea idea if they are after black or white ones, but I would suspect whichever is more affordable. I asked if they were planning on darting them as some people now do and they made it clear that they have no interest in that sort of hunting.
Where all can you still hunt a rhino, are there many that are truly wild that can be hunted, and are some rhino hunts after animals that have been relocated just for the hunting market?

Vic

There's a discussion on page 3 titled WHITE RHINO that pretty much covers the subject. If you are interested further I can let you know what Garry Kelly offers on the Mkuze Game Reserve.

Mark
