Gambia: Tourism Minister Concludes Tour of Hunting Camps

By Yunus S Saliu

The Minister of Tourism and Culture (MoTC), Benjamin A Roberts, has concluded a three-day tour of Hunting Camps operating across the country.

Stakeholders in the Tourism sector, including the National Assembly Select Committee on Tourism, accompanied the Minister.

The tour was part of a follow-up visit to tourism facilities, which the Tourism Ministry started October last year.

Among other things, the tour was meant to assess standards of operations of tourism hunting camps, welfare of staff, working conditions and to ascertain the number of Gambians employed.

Speaking to reporters on his assessment of the camps after the conclusion of the tour, Minister Benjamin A Roberts expressed satisfaction over the positive reforms made by some proprietors of the hunting camps, adhering to the recommendations made to them after his tour in October.

He disclosed that many of the hunting camps across the country were owned by French nationals, thus he expressed satisfaction that more Gambians are now employed at the hunting camps, and many after learning from their superiors, are now running their own camps.

On the significance of maintaining good standards at the hunting camps, the Minister urged proprietors of the camps to always run decent camps, and follow the guidelines of The Gambia Tourism Board.

This, he stressed, will help to attract more tourists to visit their camps, as well as boosting the socio-economic situation of both the camp owners and the country.

Minister Roberts' three-day visit took him to Kundong Fula Kunda, Sofanyama Camp, Mamutfana Camp, Sololo Camp, Nyakoi Taibatou Camp, Madiana Hunting Camp, Minang Hunting Camp, Kerewan Badala Camp and Memmeh Camp.
