Most here will have followed the Royal Kafue initiative to partner with a community in conservation. To embrace denuded lands under a joint venture agreement and to resurrect havens for wildlife. And to encourage the sport of safari hunting. Safari hunting was the obvious activity as for us all it ticked all the right boxes. A small project as this could not afford the infrastructure required for large scale non consumptive Tourism nor could the lands compare with the riches of the adjacent National Park. The community needed to realize an immediate income from its efforts and to feed off the dividend. Besides my qualifications best suited the model.

Government has now confirmed that for 2014 it is going to tax the Tourism industry a whopping 16% and this will sink those who are already struggling to keep their heads above water. Our community is already grumbling that it does not receive sufficient incentives from the wildlife sector and this increment is worrying. The word worrying being an understatement.

I cannot justify an increase in fees otherwise we simply price ourselves out of the market. What with agents commissions and foreseeable increases in trophy fees, the present ban on Lion hunting not to mention increasing community demands it would seem that the model is disadvantaged. Another understatement.

Ok enough whining so what to do? The obvious would be to find a philanthropic investor who is willing to make a small fortune. By investing a large one. Or to look alternative funding. I did note with interest that Buzz Charlton had applied for subsidies to support his anti poaching efforts which for me is well worth considering as this is a major financial burden. Being private the Wildlife Department restricts its support and anti poaching is wholly an internal affair. But really how does one go about the process of fundraising? Knocking on the door of a few wealthy individuals is not really sustainable.

It would seem that SCI retains revolving funds for projects in Africa and would my model be applicable? Does DSC support communal projects? Education? Health? Anti poaching? Wildlife conflicts? Dunno but what I do know is that support to the communal social structure would enhance the financial responsibilities that I have to the project.

Therefore this post is about seeking information from those here that do know and especially those who may have sufficient interest and energy to lend me their ear.

If the end result is tattooing Hornady on my head and selling to safari groupies my unwashed clothing then so be it.

Son of a bitch! These uneducated morons, all across Africa, are doing their best to kill this industry. When the hunting goes, the animals go. When the animals go, the people suffer. It's a sad day.

So, do you know if this tax is on the entire safari bill? Day rate and trophy fees? Charters? Dip and pack?

Not all, but most hunters, will back away when their hunt cost increases by 16%. When Tanzania raised their rates in 2007, every single one of my Tanzania Buffalo hunters cancelled. Every one! They were looking at a 25% increase in the bottom line.

This is sad news.

Andrew - Man, more crap you guys gotta put up with, sorry bro!!

I'm not totally sure about public funding/large scale funding that you seek and obviously need. But, if you do have a private anti-poaching fund available, I will happily send you $500.00 right now. Please advise?

I know its not enough, but perhaps some of us here on AR can help too - every bit counts IMO.

Good luck my friend!!!

Hi Wendall,

It will be attached to daily rates and services such as charters. Obviously we cannot extend that amount to my clients but there are many ways to skin a cat.

Cheers

Aaron,

Very generous mate and I am touched. However my plan is to use the connections and expertise here on AR to fathom if this project can be supported by some international funding. After all the project addresses hunting, communities, land use etc

The community is represented by a legal body the Kaindu Natural Resources Trust and they have a bank account etc Therefore the receiving and distribution of funds is not a problem as such.

Even if I can funding for anti poaching and some to address wildlife conflicts it will be a start.

As with everything else, the internet has changed the way people raise money - for whatever venture, cause or idea they can come up with, by getting lots of small (and maybe a few not-so-small) donations from whoever believes in what they’re doing.

It’s generally referred to as crowd-funding.

According to Wiki: Crowdfunding (alternately crowd financing, equity crowdfunding, crowd equity, crowd-sourced fundraising) is the collective effort of individuals who network and pool their money, usually via the Internet, to support efforts initiated by other people or organizations. Crowdfunding is used in support of a wide variety of activities, including disaster relief, citizen journalism, support of artists by fans, political campaigns, startup company funding, motion picture promotion, free software development, inventions development, scientific research, and civic projects. … etc. …

Here’re a few links to take a look at:

Well gentlemen, it was a thin chance that I would ever get back to Zambia considering my age and health, and close on finances, but this has completely fenced me out of Zambia all together!

I would loved to have hunted with Andrew out west, and get back to the Luangwa Valley one more time. I guess I simply waited too long till it became impossible for me!

These governments will never learn that they need to open more land and expand hunting oportunities. That would keep prices in check and create more revenue for game depts. Instead they shrink oportunities then raise prices on the few remaining! I agree with wendall they keep on this path until they kill it all together.

Andrew,

The Equator Initiative nominations are still open. Winners get US$5,000. I think you would qualify.

From their website (link below): "The Equator Prize 2014 will recognize twenty-five local sustainable development solutions for people, nature and resilient communities. ...

Equator Prize 2014 winners will each receive $5,000 (USD), with several selected for ‘special recognition’ and an additional $15,000 (USD).

Representatives of winning communities will be supported to participate in a series of events held in conjunction with the United Nations General Assembly, scheduled for September 2014 in New York."

usually the stings attached.
Be careful and read the fine print first.
Good luck, sounds like a great goal.
