What kind of velocities are you guys getting with 400 grain bullets in the .416 remington magnum, and which powders do you prefer. Thanks Tanoose

Tanoose, In the Rem 700 I had, I used both Re 15 and Varget with 400 grain Hornadies. Can't remember the exact loads but I think the Re 15 was in the low 80s and varget a bit less. Accuracy was excellent and velocities were up to 2450 plus with full accuracy. Velocities of 2500 were not hard to get but accuracy fell off once I passed 2450 with 400s. Remington factory ammo average 2410 and shot groups of about 1.5" 3 shot triangles. Mike

I can get to 2400fps with the 400 grain Partition with Reloader 15, IMR-4064 or Varget. Reloader 15 seems to be the most accurate in my rifle, a Winchester M70 Safari Express. 2400-2450fps seems to be about all a 400 grain bullet will do out of the Remington, and that's probably enough. Joe.

Like JMac, the 416 is pretty easy to load. In my Mod. 70: Rem. factory: 2395 fps. What more could you want?

Not neccessary, but my standards loads are: 410 gr Woodleigh FMJ or Weldcore, 85 gr Vv N540, 2525 f/s. ------------------

I have to agree with the group. My M70 Safari Express loaded with 81 gr Rel 15, pushing a 400 gr Interlock results in 2410 FPS. Jim

I get 2550 FPS out of my custom-built .416 Remington Magnum, built on a P-14 Enfield action. This is with Hornady 400-grain RNs and a healthy dose of IMR 4064. I don't recall the charge offhand, but it's probably not anything I'd advise you to start with. Currently, I'm quite happy with 350-grain Speer Mag Tips and a LOT of Hodgdon BL-C(2). I'm getting a tad over 2700 FPS with this load. Russ ------------------

Since I don't own a chronograph, yet, I'm don't know the exact velocity I'm getting in my 416. I shoot a Ruger No1, and due to it's long throat, I seat the 400 gr. Hornady soft pints to a O.A.L. of 3.75" This frees up quite a bit of powder capacity over a standard 3.6" length. I load 78.0 grs. of RL15, and expect to get 2350-2400 fps. I also have just started loading the 350 gr. Speer Mag-Tip, with 82.0 grs. of RL15. I expect velocity is in the 2600 fps range. The only group I've shot with the 350 gr Speer was 1.75" @ 100 yards. I like RL15, it is my prefered powder. I just bought a 5 lb. can of it. It seems to produce, on average, the highest velocity for 300-400 gr. bullets in the 416 Remington Magnum. I'd also like to try Hodgdon's H4895.
