Kenya: Narok Residents Cry Foul Over Wildlife

Residents of Munyaas village in Narok South District are crying foul over the invasion of wild animals from Maasai Mara Game Reserve into their farms.

They claim the animals have destroyed 150 acres of maize plantation, which amounts to a loss of Sh13 million. Over 400 zebras and 10 elephants have destroyed crops that they planted this season. Led by chairman of Munyaas IDPs Anthony Ngare, they said Kenya Wildlife Service is doing little to deter wild animals.

Kenya: Narok DC Warns Elephant Poachers

The Narok South DC has expressed concern over the killing of elephants at Siana Conservancy in Maasai Mara Game Reserve.

Chimwaga Mongo said poachers in collusion with some area residents have killed more than eight elephants in the past one year. Mongo blamed the local leadership and warned that those behind the poaching will be arrested and prosecuted.

The DC made the remarks yesterday at the sixth graduation of Koiyaki Guiding School, on the outskirts of Maasai Mara, where 20 students were awarded Certificates in Guiding.

He challenged the locals to supplement government efforts by reporting poachers in the area.

The DC reminded the residents that elephants are an important resource that generates revenue for Narok County Council. The poachers, who are believed to come from Tanzania, collude with locals and use poisoned arrows and spears to kill the jumbos.

Mongo asked the school management to expand the courses offered in order to attract school leavers seeking higher education since the institution is strategically placed in a remote part of the district.
