Let's suppose a hunter wants to assemble a set of rifles to hunt most anything in the world worth hunting. He already has several 416 and larger caliber guns so nothing over 375 is needed to complete the set. Given that, what three calibers and rifles would you choose? No rimfires or 22cals, just 6mm on up to and including the 375 caliber.

John,

I would be split between 300 H&H and 375 H&H or 270 and 375 H&H. Probably the former if custom rifles and the latter if no more than rebarreled factory rifles.

The third one would be a 338 Ultra.

John,
It would be the backbone of my set for sure! But one needs something else to play with now and then!

If you have several 416's, you probably like them and like to shoot them so a 375HH would probably be of little use.

John, here's my set:

.270 Winchester

.300 Winchester

.375 H&H

All custom-built on Model 70 actions. As far as I'm concerned, if you own a good, solid set of rifles in these calibers, it's time to quit buying more rifles and spend the money you'll save on hunts.

Interesting responses! I would likely pick calibers such as the 270, 300Wby and a 375Wby. While I really like the 416, it really isn't too versatile on a world wide scale so I would have to pick a 375 for the big end of this set.
BTW, another interesting set would be something like a 6mm Rem, 300Wby and 375Wby.

The crossover between the 6.5 and 7mm because the 6.5 set up for 100/120s and the 7mm for 160/175s.

For me it would be:

7mm-08 - rifle TBD, but something compact (22" or shorter barrel) and light (looking at the Browning A-Bolt Composite)

300 Magnum - whatever flavor trips your trigger (leaning towards the WSM in a M-70 laminate)

375 H&H - Winchester M-70 Classic

That, in conjunction with a REAL heavy would be good, IMHO for anything anywhere...

Some of you didn't read the question! It stated there were several big bores in the gun vault already, so all we are dealing with here is the "meat" of the line up. Keep 'em coming....

Well, since you say I already have the big bore, but if I have to pick only one of the big boys, that would be my 450/400 3", and you want a three rifle battery, I will stan by the common no non-sense things like my:

Big boy= 450/400 3" double rifle for everything from Ele, down to whitetail deer.

Mid size= My FN 375 H&H, for everything from whitetail up to ele in a pinch.

Small boy= My Mannlicher Shoenauer MCA rifle, 243 Win, for everything from P-dogs to black bear.

Then the next day...................?
