Game ranger commits suicide Beitbridge Reporter July 23, 2008 A 22-year-old Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority ranger based at White Water National Park in Matobo District committed suicide by shooting himself following interrogations over allegations of poaching rhinoceros. The Matabeleland South police spokesman, Inspector Tafanana Dzirutwe, confirmed the incident which occurred on Sunday at about 8am. “The now deceased who was employed as a game ranger committed suicide and he was a suspect in a case of poaching activities involving rhinoceros at the park and was under investigation,†said the police spokesman. Insp Dzirutwe withheld his name saying it would jeopardise investigations. He said on the day in question, the now deceased was on patrol at the park with three other rangers. “During the process he excused himself from his colleagues saying he wanted to relieve himself. A few minutes later his colleagues heard a gunshot from the direction he had taken and they rushed to investigate. They found him lying in a pool of blood and a report was then made to the police,†Insp Dzirutwe said. The man left a suicide note at his house, which indicated that he had been interrogated by police over the killing of a rhinoceros at the park. Insp Dzirutwe said the deceased’s body has since been conveyed to United Bulawayo Hospitals for a post-mortem.
