Larry;

Glad to hear he is in great care and in "good" spirits. Our prayers are with he and his entire family.

Best regards, D. Nelson

John has slept and partied at my house and me at his and Vickie's. I have around 50 days afield with him including 35 in Zim when the object was DG. I would hunt a Polar Bear with a switch with John Greeff at my side!
Dusty was 15 1/2 and already building his "book" for PH when I agreed for him to go along on my hunt in Chirisa. My scope had been knocked off and I wounded a Lion. Dusty was pizzed that we would not allow him to follow up with us. He was in the bakkie with the brave Game Scout and heard the now twice wounded Lion roar but could not charge us thru the thick Jess two mornings later. Dusty grabbed my .375RUM back-up, jumped on top of the Cab and put a double lung shot in the hopping along Lion allowing us to end it a few minutes later. He could have been listening to the iPod I brought him.
John is the comsumate PH and was mentoring Dusty to be like him. I love these guys!
I have just spoke with Wes and he is going to Africa Tuesday. He will take donations and deliver them to the family. He hopes to talk to Vickie this afternoon...she is with John currently. The eye is gone.
Keep John, Dusty and the family in your thoughts and prayers, please.

Larry,
Been away from the forum for a few days and just saw this report about John. It sounds like he is getting the best care and will recover but it will be a long road back. Please send my best wishes and speedy recovery to John and his stepson. I had replied to his email to me regarding an elephant after you hunt and I spoke but did not hear back from him assuming he was off hunting or it did not get through. I can't imagine a more frightening experience and my prayers go to him and the family. Keep us updated and how we can help.

Paul

Just a dumb thought. When we all pulled together for Punki and Brittany Boddington, they established the Boddington Fund thru "SomethingMoreSafaris", for PH's injured in the line of duty. This certainly fits the bill, and I'm sure they would know the ins and outs of donations.

Truly unfortunate for all involved and their families. Often, the dangerous parts of Africa can also be the most alluring parts of Africa. As Hunters and friends....we stand together!
Prayers and donation on their way.

I believe Mr. Boddington has already been contacted.

Blank, Brett has it right. I have been talking to Craig and have connected with the foundation. More to come very soon. Thanks for the thoughts.

An update from this morning. John is doing better and they still have not made a final decision on his eye. The bit on that side was the worst as it broke his jaw and did some nerve damage as well. They are now assessing what they need to do to make the most effective repairs. Although this is not positive news on the eye we can be hopeful.

I also taked to Dusty who is feeling stronger daily. The good news on his side is that so far he has only lost the one toe and they have worked to reattach the other two injured toes.

We will get something more established today on fundraising and for now the "something more safaris" looks like a very good option.

I was told this evening that John has in fact lost his eye. This from a guy who's mother is with Medical Air Rescue Service in Zim.

I can't verify it, just relaying what I was told.

Working on final details on fundraising now. Should have posted by tomorrow.

Some good news. I talked to Vicki tonight and Johns eye is improving a bit. It is still not clear on whether it will be removed or not but the eye surgeon wants to give it some time. He will undergoe quite a bit of surgery this week on facial nerves and repair. Lets all keep our fingers crossed that the eye can be saved. He has now been moved out of ICU and is in a private ward.

She asked to express the thanks of the entire family for all of their friends for their support and prayers.

Next post from me will be on a fundraising effort. I probably will start a new post.

Thanks all,

Larry

Fantastic effort by Larry and all who set up the fund to help out John and his family. I know that this will be a huge help to them as it was to Alan and his family when he was gored by the buff last year.

Larry please put in $100 towards the 22 raffle but withdraw my ticket- like Russel I have too many guns as it is! If you are happy with the arrangement I will reinburse you at the shows. Hoping for some good news soon!

No sweat Buzz but as the 22 was tossed up to get at least something going we will hold off on it and anyone that sent in for it will get a raffle ticket for the Searcy. As I was not able to do any photos, etc. we did not get much of a start on the 22 but we are getting lots of responses on the Searcy. I will buy you a Searcy ticket and we will have lots of time to catch up. No worries. Thanks for your support of the efforts. How did Dande East go this year? One of my favorite places for crop raiding Eles.

Vickie found time to email this morning around 11:30 JoBurg time.
John had a rough day yesterday as they undermedicated and he passed his pain threshold which I personaly know to be high based on an incident on a hunt. He is much better pain wise this morning and happy to be in a ward. Surgery tomorrow on facial nerves and ear. They have left his eye in but sight is lost.
Dusty lost middle toe of left foot and Vickie expects another to be amputated soon.
Keep them in your thoughts and prayers. It is going to be a long process.

I too want to say how impressed I am with this thread. This is the way we're supposed to band together when our own are hurting. Our most distinguished members have mobilized in an effort that will generate instant relief to the family involved, and the flow of information from the bush, through the hospital to the internet has been accurate.

From a media standpoint, this is a fine example by getting out in front of a problematic hunting situation and eliminating speculation, we can control the flow of information.

Nice work by all.

Since John and Dusty are both in recovery phase now, and even tho it will be a long slow process, and most of you don't have a personal bond with John like BigBBear, Wes Hixon and I, here is a short John tale to help lighten our pain.
Seven or eight days into my first adventure with John we were coming back to Kazungula Camp, Metetsi 6, after checking Leopard baits. John was flying, as usual, across the two track with the windows up because of his allergies when a very big Black Mamba started across the trail in front of us. John accelerated to try to get it but it reared and struck the cab of the truck just back of his window. The "guys" almost knocked themselves out of the bakkie jumping to their left. John slid to a stop, grabbed the shotgun from beneath his seat and I grabbed my .375RUM. We trotted back to where the Mamba had been....looked at the waist high thick gras, it was late April, looked at each other and trotted back to truck without saying a word. As we started rolling again, I asked John what would happen if someone were actually bitten by a Mamba way out here. John said, "Well, Tom, I will tell you. Were it a client, we would rush back to camp and have him sign his Travellers Cheques!"

Got an update note from Vickie that she sent around 22h00 today.
They only kept John in surgery around an hour today as he has some infection that must clear before progressing further. The facial nerve damage is quite severe and Doctors have advised that full repair is unlikely and that John will show some palsy signs. The outer ear repair went well. Vickie advises that although he has quite a bit of contining pain, his spirits remain high. Dusty is to have some skin grafting on other toes and wants to get out of there and go home!
Keep them in your thoughts and prayers!
