I use those made by Murray Custom Leather in Ft Worth, the ones with elastic loops. Dick Murray and his very small crew produce good products.

I have used Murray leather carriers for 20 years or so.

I have sizes that hold .375s, .416s, .450s and .500s.

I think I have four Murray belts.

All are brown and are embossed in a beautiful basket weave pattern.

They don't wear out. They just get broken in.

Great stuff.

Legistine actu quod scripsi?

Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue.

What I have learned on AR, since 2001:
1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken.
2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps.
3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges.
4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down.
5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine.
6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle.
7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions.
8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA.
9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not.
10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact.
11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores.
12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence.
13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Arjun,

I find it hard to beat Murray Leather. I have used his cartridge carriers for about 20 years. They are of very high quality and has said above they do not wear out they just break in and they do not stretch out. As you can see, we are tocayos (namesake in Spanish) but as far as I can tell, we are not related, but when I see him at the DSC I address him as Tio (Spanish for uncle)

Thanks everyone for your recommendations. I always end up giving away my stuff to PHs or trackers and end up with nothing at the end of a trip or two Smiler

I see the leather ones a lot, but is anyone rocking canvas? I tend to gravitate towards those a bit more. I also see they make models that hold anywhere from 5-10 rounds. What's everyone's consensus on how many is good for a bolt gun or double rifle?

Here are ten big bore cartridges out in the open:

From 40 to 50 caliber. Slides onto your belt.
Not fancy, but highly functional.

My African ammo carriers were custom made by the late master leather craftsman Jim Wear from Wyoming, and were made out of rhino, elephant and hippo hide. Although not a removable ammo carrier, this is my Searcy 375 Flanged with a custom ammo belt, fixed knife sheath, flashlight holder and Leatherman holder made out of some of my rhino hide by Jim before his passing. The knife is an Arno Bernard croc skin handled knife. Pic was taken in Zimbabwe on my last hunt there. He also did one in ele, hippo and another in rhino for my various calibers of DG rifles and doubles. I've had many others by various leather makers over the years, but none has matched the work and quality that Jim put into his. I like the closed bottom on an ammo carrier. I've lost ammo with open ones a number of times on various hunts. The 375 Flanged was built by Butch to shoot iron sights, an RMR or a scope.

Mike: It not only looks good, but it wears very comfortably, and like you said about yours, they just seem to get broken in better and better over time. Big Grin

I totally get it.

I am having a couple of belts and four ammo carriers custom made from the belly skin of a croc hide right now.

I couldn’t think of anything else to do with the hide!

I can only hope they are as good as my Murrays.

You need to be careful when transiting between countries with leather items that derive from "certain animal species" ..... its not just the horn and tusks that are prohibited. Wink

Thanks for your concern. These belts are always listed on my 4457's along with the rifles, to show that I left the U.S. with them. They are also stamped with Jim Wear's Wyoming logo to show that they were made here in the U.S., and I have bills of sale for each, for Jim producing the belts. I have never had a problem, having all of that available with me. In fact, I have never been asked about any of them. The only place that I would have any concern would be the U.S. and I have travelled out of the U.S. and back in with them a number of times. Of course, there's always a first time with an uneducated CBP officer . . . . . . Big Grin Now, if I had purchased them in Africa and was attempting to bring them into the U.S. I would have some real concern-I wouldn't do it.
