Jumbo tramples woman

A WOMAN who was tilling her fields was trampled to death after elephants that invaded Chief Sogwala`s area in Lower Gweru were provoked by herd boys.

Mr Wellington Ngulube, the Chief Executive Officer of Vungu Rural District Council, confirmed the incident that occurred in Madingane ward on Thursday last week.
He said the elephants may have moved to the area in search of food especially the maize crop.
“The animals were provoked by herd boys who cracked their whips and that frightened the elephants resulting in them getting irritated and they started running berserk.
“They came across the woman who was working in her field and one of the elephants trampled her,†said Mr Ngulube.
He said they had to summon parks officials and workers from Lenton Safaris which runs the local authority’s campfire project but they found the elephants gone.
“The elephants are believed to have migrated to Silobela area which is under Zibangwe Rural District Council. They are said to have killed another person there.
“We want to warn villagers not to make irritating noise to these animals as they are a danger to human life. It is normal during this time of the year to have elephants coming into our district as they are migratory,†he said.
Mr Ngulube said the Vungu RDC, working in conjunction with other stakeholders like Campfire and the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, has set up a Problem Animal Control team to curb the dangers posed by wild animals to villagers.
“Our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family but we want to ensure people that the problem is under control. We are on full alert until the people harvest their crops,†he said.
