ok gentlemen, I'm bored so here goes. For my next Zimbabwe trip I plan to take buffalo, waterbuck, zebra, bushbuck, warthog, impala and maybe a gemsbok if I can arrange transporation. What two rifle combo should I take 416 Rigby/300 H&H or 416Rigby/375 H&H? I WANT to take the 416 so that's not negotiable, but the other 2 are! jorge

Take the one that you shoot the best.

The only difference is, if you take the 375 you have a back up Dg rifle if the 416 breaks. The odds of the 416 breaking are pretty slim. It's more likly that the airline would lose the gun case, but in that case I assume that it would contain both rifles.

Of course the 300 H&H is a traditional african round so it would be neat to use it.

Of course the 375 H&h is a traditional african round so it would be fun to use.

What the hell - take all three.

Jorge,

I was shooting my iron-sighted .375 H&H yesterday (ghost ring), and so being 60 and a half years old I know what ranges are suitable for me with that rifle. I don't know how your rifles are sighted, but I expect the .300 H&H is scoped, as most are. Probably most .375s are scoped too, which brings us to the .416. I would expect to use that for the Cape buff, so either irons or a scope would work for that critter.

I would have at least one scoped rifle along as often times you need one.

Jim: All three are scoped, albeit with very different types of scopes although the 416 and 375 both have QD mounts and iron sights for backup. jorge

jorge,

Those are 3 great calibers....all classics. You are spoiled for choice! TerryR & HunterJim pointed out both sides of the issue as I see it.

I think I'd take the 300 H&H along with the 416 Rigby. That pair just seems to "balance" out right.

Regards,
Dave

I like the .375 / .416 tandem very much, with plainsgame and buffalo on the menu.

Hmm, this can be very irretating [Eek!]

I would go the 416 and the 300. Leave the 375. The 416 would be better for buffalo and the 300 on plains game.

For a one gun safari on plains and cats the 375 would be the choice [Smile]

Hi,

I think it also depends where you will hunt the buff. and the plains game:

If I was hunting in DG areas like Chewore I would take the .375 - just to have an adaquate rifle in your hands when hunting antilope because there is always a chance to run into an angry buff / lion or elefant - if you hunt the plains game afterwards on a game farm take the .300 - that's all you need for there...

How about 416/9.3 x 62?

The 9.3 is an excellent plains game caliber but will do fine on dangerous game if you must put it into service.

The 300 H&H is really too light to replace the 416 for thick skinned game should the 416 break.

Otherwise I would take the 375.

I personally would never go to Africa without a good 300mag. Just too versatile to leave behind if there is any amount of plains game on the menu. The 416 and 300 is my all time favorite pairing for a safari.

I'd go the 416 with the 300 H&H and have done that many times...I always have a box of 220 gr. solids just in case...Killed a Buffalo with one of those long pills..

My 78 year old neighbor has shot all his buffalo with the 300 H&H and 220 gr. Woodleigh solids that I loaded for him, including the 48" plus old dugga boy on my web page....he accidently shot all his plains game with them also, a couple of them made quite a few tracks before going down, about 100 yards or so...

The point is the 300's will work in a pinch, but not my choice...but if one has an extra scope and a set of auxillary irons or peep sight on his 416, then not much can go wrong...

I have used the 416 Rem. on a couple of one gun safaris and it worked perfectly on everything from Impala, to Eland to Cape Buffalo....

Either way you go will be fine I'm sure.

As I suspected, you guys are trapped just like I am. 9.3X62? I don't recall mentioning that 375 wannabe! On the 300, I'm sticking with 180gr Swift A Frames. The PH I'm hunting with always gives my second rifle to one of the trackers in case I need it. I'll be hunting Matetsi and Malangani areas of Zimbabwe. As of right now, I'm planning on the 300/416 combo, but guess what, just finished wringing out my new Weatherby Accumark in 340 Weatherby. 3/8" groups with 250gr Nosler Partitions! Decisions, decisions, I'm acting like a damned female, can't make up my mind! jorge

Since the tracker is carrying your second rifle, I'd take the 416 and 300. I'd carry the 416, until the Buff hunting was done. Then I'd carry the 300.

On my 2 previous trips I've carried a 416 and a 375. This time I'm taking a bow.

I guess you can't go wrong with any of the combinations. The worst possible pair would be a 22 rimfire and a 577 double [Big Grin]
