Okay, the taxidermist that has my stuff from my Sept 2010 hunt has it ready to go for shipping. I received their invoice and the price quoted is in Rand. Okay, my bank here says that shouldn't be a problem for the wire transfer, BUT, in order to get the money there in Rands one of the tidbits of info needed is what is called a "Bank Sort Code or Clearing Code", a six digiet number and we haven't been able to find that yet for this bank (ABSA Bank) or for South Africa itself.

Any of you South African hands know anything about this?

I'm also trying to get the taxidermist to tell me a price in US dollars as I don't need this Bank Sort Code to send them US money.

With it being the weekend here and in South Africa, banks and the taxidermist are closed and so I'm looking here for that info if any of you know it or have heard of it.

Thanks,

Willi

Your taxidermist should have given you all the pertinent details for the transfer. I needed the bank Name, branch, Address and something called the SWIFT code. I also needed the account particulars that the money was being transferred to. This was all forwarded to me with by the companies I transferred money to.

I do know that my bank here [First National Bank - or FNB] has what is called a SWIFT CODE. This could very well be the same as what your USA bank calls a "Bank Sort Code or Clearing Code". As you said, it's weekend now, but if by Monday or so no-one has yet posted the ABSA bank Swift, Sorting or Clearing Code, I'll find out and post or PM. You may wish to know that ABSA is one of the large, long established and well known banks in South Africa.

In good hunting.

To be on the safe side, ask the owner of the destination account (taxidermist?) to in turn ask his bank what the wiring instructions are, and get them in writing from him in his letterhead, or at least in an email.

You will need more info (name of account holder, account number, etc.) than just the SWIFT code of the bank.

Otherwise you risk sending your money elsewhere and a bureaucratic process to get your money back...
