Got an email this morning from fellow AR member Wink he is in Dar for work purposes...What a bummer so close but so far..
My good friend and Ph Ian Dodds of Hunter's Africa was hit by chui..Both arms chewed up pretty good, but will be heading back into the bush for next safari soon...
Will post more when I get first hand account..

Just got short burst of chui attack..bit tracker then on to Ian..He threw it to the ground after having fingers broke by bites and used his knife to kill it... Mad Mad

Now there is a guy who's got a story to tell!

What kind of mouth breathing, long stem eye donor, doesn't carry a knife in Africa? Big Grin

I always help out with the cleaning chores in the field. Confused

Doesn't everybody?

Plus you never know when you're going to have to knife your way out of a cat mauling... Eeker

Now was that knife a CRF or PF knife and was it tempered with 4570 stainless?

Now I wonder whether it was a sheath knife or a folder.

I have been told the folder are useless on leopards. Smiler

Nitrox,

If it is a CRF folder and tempered in 4570 stainless and thrust at very slow velocity it'll penetrate much deeper than a previously proven DG knife or even a spear.

Of course if it is a single stack PF folder it is even better.

If I remember, Charles Cottar once killed a leopard with a knife. In India, tigers have been killed with choppers (like machetes) - Bagha Jatin, one of India's freedom fighters gained renown killing a tiger in the Sunderbans with one when he was a young man.

I guess when someone is desperate they fight hard and that may have caused these very rare occurrences of big cats killed with large knives.

Come on now he may chew you up a little but if you put a knife through his vitals he's going to die.

Now though I think his attacker used Leopard Fu.

A good knife can save the day but I never could see how any man might "fight off" anything but a very small or very sick leopard. Those that have got lucky, in some way, shape or form. Cat muscle tissue is said to be the strongest in the animal kingdom (insects not included).

Cat tissue may be the strongest, but do you really think it will stop a sharp knife.
Come on people think sometimes.

No doubt, I think it is just a timing issue on if the chewing or the knife works first.
