Does anyone know anything about a book by Richard Estes, called The Safari Companion. I believe it a book on African mammals. Sprig Rose lipped maidens--light foot lads!!!

I have a copy and find that it has quite a bit of detailed info about each animal including social/mating system, predators, how they move, how they communicate, territorial advertising, aggression behavior, submission & sociable behavior, response to predators, and more. The info is incredible, but it has line drawings. I have other books with good photos of the animals. I recommend this book if you want to get to know the behavioral aspects. I have that book too. If I remember correctly it was mostly about their natural history and behavior. ~Ann

Actually, the best I've found for pictures is http://www.ultimatefieldguide.com/index.htm But, it's not a book. And that makes it difficult to take along.

Not African, but at least South African: The little book "African Huntingg. Book1 Southern Africa" by Alex van der Post covers the main animals plus a few more. It is a good guide for the beginner wanting to know what he/she can hunt, where and what they look like. In good hunting, Andrew McLaren Andrew McLaren Professional Hunter and Hunting Outfitter since 1974. http://www.mclarensafaris.com The home page to go to for custom planning of ethical and affordable hunting of plains game in South Africa! Enquire about any South African hunting directly from andrew@mclarensafaris.com After a few years of participation on forums, I have learned that: One can cure: Lack of knowledge – by instruction. Lack of skills – by practice. Lack of experience – by time doing it. One cannot cure: Stupidity – nothing helps! Anti hunting sentiments – nothing helps! Put-‘n-Take Outfitters – money rules! My very long ago ancestors needed and loved to eat meat. Today I still hunt!
