I had a rough couple off months behind me going through a devorce. On the 6th September I phoned Tom Laas (a friend) asking him if he would mind if I came to visit telling him my story. He emediately said it would not be a problem and that I am welcome to stay as long as I needed. We arranged that I would be on the farm on Sunday 10th September.
Sunday morning I got a call from him saying I must bring my 338 Lapua with as he wanted me to shoot a mature but young Eland bull for meat, I realy had to be asked nicely Wink
When I got to his farm Bosveld near Roetan I unpacked and had a quiet evening around the fire catching up on the hunts he had this year.
Monday morning saw me checking the Lapua's zero, which was as usual spot on.
At 7:30 myself and Christoff the guide started out to look for the Eland or a one horned waterbuck bull. We found the waterbuck but unfortunate it gave us the slip and we returned to the lodge for lunch.
At 14:00 we started out on foot again this time looking for the Eland, at about 15:10 we saw them and started our stalk. At first we only saw some cows but when got closer we saw a young bull and us beeing only 55 to 60 yards from them and it getting late 15:45 I took the shot. He was 1/4 ring towards me and I took him in front of the left shoulder the bullet exiting behind the right shoulder. The bull went only 40 yards and expired never knowing where the shot came from.
I called in the truck and Tom Laas was very happy with the bull I shot although it did not have a very big body, we took some foto's and loaded the bull. He asked me if I wanted the trophy wich I emediately excepted.
Back at the skinning fasility I put the tape to the Eland and realised that it was a Rowland ward trophy. I will post the foto as soon as I have it developed and the guys can then gues the size. My first animal taken after my wife leaving me, what a present.
This coming weekend I am going bow hunting.

Gee! I went hunting in RSA to help me get over my divorce too! It just cost a bit more and entailed a 20 hour plane flight Wink

But the pre-safari planning gave me a reason to be doing something for over a year before the trip and that saved a lot of my sanity.

Congratulations on a great hunt, make sure your Ex know you're happy, that drives them crazy. thumb

Pity about the trouble you have experienced of late. If it is any consolation, you are not the first, and you won't be last.... To look on the bright side, think of how much hunting you'll be able to do now - no "Wifey Poo" to ask for permission any more. Wink There is a good side and a bad side to most things in life...

Weidmannsheil on your Eland. Sounds like a lot of fun.

Jaco you are close, the shortest horn(left) is 40 3/8" and the right horn is 42 1/4"

Keep in mind that he was shot because he was a young bull. There are many bigger bulls on the property
