Just made it back from the Karamojo region of Uganda and had a tremendous hunt. Nigel Theisen was my ph and I could not have been more pleased. There is so much to tell and so much work I need to do.

I just hunted the far north of the area and really just a fraction of it. The hunting is good and the potential is tremendous! Nobody knows what is really available and Nigel and I made new discoveries every other day.

I took 2 cape buffalo and could have taken other species but was really not interested. ledvm will post a couple pictures for me on this topic and I will try and get a complete report soon. My buff are 40" and 43" but we saw on several occasions 100-150 yards inside Kidepo Park a bull that Nigel and I both think is 48-50. The bull has massive bosses and a deep drop, a bull of several lifetimes.

Welcome back,
Welcome to group the few the proud who have hunted Karamoja since it opened. I think I have pictures of the monster bull that old devil stays just inside the park all the time. It is a wonderful area I can't wait for your report! Nigel is a great PH to. Did you get to meet Philip?? he is also a great guy. there are some record book animals in that north area and the south too.

There's some stunning bulls in that area and they often cross between the areas.

Here's just a few of 'em and excuse the graffiti but I'm sick to death of bloody image thieves. Confused

It's a bull and by the looks of the unusual horns and not much by way of bosses, I'd expect it to have suffered testicular damage at some time in it's youth.

FWIW, he's also unusually big in the body. ..... actually, he's mucking fassive! Wink

Truly spectacular and no doubt that the best is yet to come out of Uganda.

Steve,

Have you never used the herding technique when animals such as these are standing just inside a protected park.

It works like this. You secure a Park Entry permit under the pretense that you are a photographic tourist. Advance the timing on your car engine so it back fires ... never mind I will call you.

Dam we where in a rover to. The way they run you would not have had to advance the timing!!!! I would not tease STEVE never never never OK OK so I would tease him at every opportunity. He did teach me how far out of the hunting car you had to before it to be ethical. With me being handy capped and from the south I did get to hear him screaming the sticks are ready a time or two. NOW I'm not saying he thought I was standing to close to the truck But he did seam to think I needed to walk a few miles to shoot something ANYTHING animal animal animal AND yes I have has a few friend tell me we need to right a book about his hunt is was way to much fun animal

jdollar, only way to check for soft bosses is to have aubs458 check the scrotum for ticks while you "knuckle tap test" the boss. Big Grin Cool

Working from my IPhone...will elaborate more when I have better computer access...but...my opinion is that cape buff in Kidepo Valley are slightly smaller in body size than lower Zambezi Valley buff.

Not to mean that there is not GREAT trophy potential...but...that photos must be evaluated with that in mind. Wink

Lane,

I was referring to their often being larger in body size than Selous buffalo, not Valley buffalo.

Frankly, it's been bloody years since I set foot in the Zambezi Valley and I don't remember how they compare after so long. old

I think the bulls in Kidepo Valley (northern extent of Karamoja) would average around 1300-1400 lbs. with a range of 1200 - 1500.

I am jealous. What a great hunt. Why didn't you invite me? How rude.

That is the same torn up shirt you wore in 2004 on our Lion hunt! A feller who can afford a Uganda Buffalo hunt can surely afford a new shirt!

I am happy for you. That is a fantastic pair of Buff.

Congrats my friend.

Another Karamoja buff. See Mike the this buff has wide flat horns as well.

That bull was a smidge over 39" and I promise...that he did not weigh over 1300 lbs.

Lane, tremendous bull. To me it seems many of the bulls have the wide flat horn style in the Karamojo and they are for sure smaller than the Zim buffs I have shot and seen.

you defiantly get a mixed bag oh horn shapes in Karamoja. we looked at some really wide flat ones some with nice deep curls you name it at it's there. Lot of very old bulls with lots of character as you can see in Steve's pictures. If memory serves me Lane got his bull and one day later I got the scum cap I was looking for.
