Has anyone done any engraving work...(africa type art work) on their rifles? If so what have you done...and frankly was it worth it? I saw a few rifles at the range that looked might pretty,...but I'm not sure I would want to trapise through the bush with them. Any thoughts?

Some folks hate engraved guns and some love them. Good engraving is a true art form. Engraving does not make your firearm shoot better but when I look at an engraved gun during the lull in action I appreciate the artist efforts. It adds to the pleasure of ownership for me.
I have engraved guns, knives and other objects.
Do pin strips on a car make it a better car?
Do cuff links on your shirt make the sleeve button any better?
I have two prairie dogs on a mound engraved on a beautiful folding knife and on the other side is a elk. These are two of my favorite things to hunt and shoot. Who in hell would put prairie dogs on a knife...me! I enjoy the look and the feel of the engraving. Brings back good memories of past adventures.

You can borrow money but you can not borrow time. Go hunting with your family.

Safari Press has a book on rifle engraving if you want to get some ideas of what to do with your rifle.

Have a look at the pics of my Belgium Custom Shop Browning 375 H+H in the Big Bore Forum

Hunting is getting as close as you can, shooting is getting as far away as possible.

I dislike engraving. I don't like what it costs, and I really don't care for it cosmetically, either. I like high-quality, plain-looking rifles that WORK. Therein lies the real beauty for my purposes. Any money I save by NOT have a rifle engraved is money I can put into more hunting............

I've only engraved revolvers so far; a S&W Model 48 for my son and a Model 57 for me. Same engraving pattern. His name on his. Mine on mine. Years from now when I'm gone, he or his son, or his son's son will know who hunted with that gun. You're not engraving a gun, you're engraving a memory.

I have several books on engraving and will eventually learn how to do it. I love engraved shotguns. For some reason, though, I prefer my rifles embellished only by a good finish and fine walnut . . . unless they have to go into the Arctic. Then I want them embellished by black Teflon and fiberglass!
