Two poachers nabbed, dogs shot dead From Bulawayo Bureau TWO poachers from Binga who tried in vain to justify their illegal actions by claiming that their children were on the verge of starvation were arrested and their eight dogs shot dead by game scouts, a court has heard. Champion Mutale (35) and Luka Nyoni (25) pleaded guilty to violating the Parks and Wildlife Act when they appeared before resident magistrate Mr Collet Ncube last Tuesday. They were both sentenced to six months in jail but three were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour. The remaining three months were also suspended on condition that they undergo 105 hours of community service at Chininga Primary School in Binga. The court heard that on May 31, the pair, together with other two colleagues who are still at large, illegally entered Chizarira National Park to hunt. They had eight dogs and were armed with a spear each. The four were, however, spotted by game scouts on patrol who ordered them to stop, but they took to their heels, leaving their dogs "confused". As the four fled into different directions, the game scouts were forced to fire shots, killing the eight dogs. Mutale and Nyoni were later arrested while their accomplices disappeared in the park. WE sometimes have to shoot poachers dogs on the ranches in SA //// unfortunately the poachers just (gap it) and leave their dogs behind if disturbed so we dont have much option but to shoot them ... No problem to the poachers, they soon get or steal some more dogs or whatever and are back poaching again. It is a fact of life in Africa which is not going to go away. These are the black guys with the dogs & the spears knives etc //// the white guys are a bit more dangerious as they generally poach with high powered rifles. And remember in SA you cant shoot people unless you are the poacher or the criminal then you have virtually free rein it seems Peter | |||
