In preperation for an upcoming safari, I am getting ready to work up loads for my friends WTBY 300. It will be used for Zebra, Hartebeest, impala and warthog. This rifle has always shot 180 gr. Hornadys for 3 shot, one inch groups, but we will be using a tougher bullet for Africa. In all of my reading on the subject, most pro's recommend a heavy for caliber bullet for best effectivness, so I figured the Nosler Partition 200gr. spire point would be effective and is readily available locally. In the experiences of folks on this board, do you think this is a good choice over the 180 or 220 gr. partitions, any better choices, like the Barnes Triple X, and what weights? I know a lot of people use the 180's in the standard 30's and the magnums and are satisfied with their performance, so we decided to see what Y'all had to say. Thanks, Lee.

168 or 180 TSX In my book its the only way to go. But there are other good bulets out there

Good luck

200 grain North Fork.

I used that bullet in my 300 H&H on sable, kudu, nyala and waterbuck and had outstanding performance.

I would not criticise others choices, the 180/06' combo is bread and butter, but the 200Nf/300Wea. is b&b with swiss cheese and smoked salmon ontop.I like it. go the NF, it will take all the weatherby can dish out and then some.

I like to use 200 grain bullets in Africa. So far, I have used trophy bonded and Kodiak bonded core bullets with great success. I posted photos of some of the recovered bullets on another thread, but if you would like that photo again, I will post it. In my mind, nosler partitions will do the job, but they are bare minimum as re. toughness. Barnes X bullets are also fine.

If one is going to spend several thousand bucks on a hunting trip anywhere, it only makes sense to put out a few extra bucks to get a good, well constructed bullet.

Personally I think the 300 Weatherby with the 200 gr. NP you are considering is just about perfect. I can drive that bullet about 2900 fps in my 300 Win Mag so you should easily get 3000 fps with the Weatherby.

I've got complete penetration on moose and I just had a complete end to end pass through on a big black bear with the 200 NP. I personally used the 300 Win Mag with the 180 SAF on 4 safaris taking animals upto and including zebra and lion. Although the 180 SAF never failed I think the 200 NP gives more tissue destruction and deeper penetration.

I'd go with the 180 TSX myself. MORE than enough penetration. I used the 180NP in africa last time with great success however, I think the TSX gives you a bigger "kill envelope" with the bigger animals and accuracy is unsurpassed in my experience. jorge

THE ONLY REASON TO SHOOT ONE OF THE 30 CAL. MAGNUMS IS SO THAT YOU CAN USE 200 GR. BULLETS. IF YOU PLAN TO USE 180, OR LIGHTER BULLETS USE A 30-06!

If your parents didn't have any children chances are you won't either.

I used 200 grain Swifts and have never regreted that choice. If I learned one thing in Africa it is that heavy for caliber makes the best sense.

Good luck.

Good hunting!

Thanks for the replies, 200 gr. it is! Now he just has to decide which one. Locally, we have Nosler, Swift, Barnes and Trophy Bonded. I'll let Bob decide. He is using 300 gr. swifts in his .375 H&H and 300 Barnes banded solids for Buff, However, he is thinking about trying the 350 gr. Woodleighs to up the energy numbers for his buff. Some folks believe they up the old .375 a good bit in the power dept. Thanks for all the replies! Lee.

Took a great eland in Zim's Save Conservancy last year with a 200g NP in my 300 Wby. The eland didn't make it 75 yds before calling it quits. Also took a warthog as well. No complaints, especially from my PH.

Look at the new Barnes MRX. Heaviest currently available is 180 gr.

Depends on the terrain. For the bushveld thornbush country I'd be tempted to try Woodleigh's "centenary" 240 gr Weldcore Protected Point at the manufacturer's recommended 2400 fps. Otherwise, for hunting out in the open a 200 grain premium bullet makes sense if you are going to run the Wby to the firewall.

My 300 wby shoots best with the 168gr TSX and I would not be hesitant to hunt PG with it.

Although I am planning on trying the MRX as soon as I can.

Nothing wrong with the 180gr though, if your rifle shoots well them.

That's a point no one has made here yet. What bullet does your barrel shoot well?

My .300 Win Mag shoots 180 gr Partitions very well. I'll try the MRX and see what it can do. If it really has 100% weight retention, then maybe less ruined meat will result, but for the traveling sport hunter in Africa, meat isn't an issue, is it?
