Last Updated: Thursday, 24 February 2005 Farmer fined for illegal hunting Herald Reporter A Beatrice commercial farmer was yesterday convicted and fined $300 000 or one month in prison for allowing his friends from Germany to hunt wild animals at his farm. Harare magistrate Mrs Omega Mugumbate fined Trevor Jack Greaves (65) after he pleaded guilty to contravening the Parks and Wildlife Act. Greaves was also convicted of breaching the Tourism Act by allowing the Germans to set up guest houses at his farm and receiving payment for the facilities. Agreed facts are that Greaves, who owns Goeie Hoop farm in Beatrice, operates a game park at the farm. On an unknown date between August 1 and August 31 2003, Greaves received four German nationals namely Wilfred Lachmann, Wolfgang Schuchart, Gerhard Siekmunn and Florian Wegehaupt at his farm. The visitors intended to hunt. Greaves and the four visitors went on to hunt at his game park killing eight impalas, three wildebeest, one eland, two kudus, one reedbuck and one steenbuck all valued at $670 000 at the time. Before allowing the four to hunt at the farm Greaves did not find out if they had signed a declaration allowing them to hunt as required by the law. Investigations were later made and animal skins and heads valued at $335 000 were recovered at Bromley Gameskin Tannery where they had been sent for processing. The State argued that Greaves’ actions were in contravention of section 59 of the Parks and Wildlife Act as read with section 57 of the Parks and Wildlife Regulations Statutory Instrument 114 of 1993. Charges of contravening the Tourism Act arose after the four Germans, during their stay at the farm, set up guest houses and paid a total of US$5 700 to Greaves. The State argued that Greaves was not authorised to operate a tourist facility in terms of the Act. He also failed to remit the foreign currency thereby prejudicing the State of a total of $5 700. Ms Barbara Mupawaenda prosecuted. Kathi kathi@wildtravel.net 708-425-3552 "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only one page."

Maybe he should have smeared some shoe polish on his face OR more likely left a filled sealed envelope on someone's desk. But heck, he still HAS a farm!

Forest True he was breaking the letter of the law, but don't you find it a bit rich that this guy, a WHITE FARMER, who still owns his OWN LAND, and his hunting with pseudo clients on his OWN LAND, presumably his OWN ANIMALS, gets prosecuted while hundreds of black bastards, plus South Africans are looting stolen properties, poaching to hell stolen animals and are getting away completely free with it. Even selling the hunts by Auction through a particular USA hunting organisation ???! Personally I don't think he has done a thing wrong and gov'ts can get f@#$ed with their taxes, rules, licences and regulations.
