I have a .505 Gibbs that I want to put a red dot sight on. I would like it to be removable with no tools or a minimum of tools. I was thinking of the Aimpoint T-2 or H-2. Has anyone here used a red dot or reflex sight on a ribbed barrel of a safari rifle? If so what brand and model of mount did you use? This particular rifle has a rib that might work. Thanks for any help. MMP

I have a Trijicon RMR that I like very much. It has no on/off switch to worry about, and batteries last over a year. I have a short length of Picatinney rail mounted on several guns, and the RMR can be switched easily and quickly with no tools. It works on my .470 double, on a competition pistol, and on a muzzle-loading hunting rifle.

I have an Aimpoint on a 510's quarter rib.
Mounted a short piece of Picatinney rail as above. I can use the Irons or replace the H1 with a Fastfire without tools. Just two holes in the rib and you're good to go.

I've wanted to put an Aimpoint H-2 on my CZ 458 Lott for a couple of years. You can use a Picatinney rail but I don't want that. The guys I hunted with in Namibia had one mounted with just a simple single mount but I was told you can't get that mount in the USA. You would have to go to the European market.

I agree the Euro mounts looked inviting but they were a bit wide for my rib and I couldn't mill them to sit low enough on the rib to allow me to use the irons. In the end a piece of rail open up the center was both cheap and effective. And ugly ....

I have a Trijicon RMR mounted on one just behind the rear sight using a Trijicon mount and having JJ Perideaux mill the grooves for it into the rib. JJ also carries the mount he likes to use for this application.

I got a Vortex Razor for my CZ550 earlier this year.

Used a Weaver style mount and it works beautifully. Very impressed with the Vortex.

Thanks, I really appreciate that. I'm going to look into it, looks like you have the same rifle I have.

If you do a search in the double rifle forum there are several people who have the rib machined to except a red dot sight. Since the rib on a bolt action stand a little higher off the barrel it would seem a simple solution to your problem.
