They are Oryx everywhere, but there are a lot of different kinds of Oryx, and the GEMSBOK (PRONOUNCED HEMS-BOK)is just one species of Oryx! ....Mac >>>===(x)===> MacD37, ...and DUGABOY1 DRSS Charter member "If I die today, I've had a life well spent, for I've been to see the Elephant, and smelled the smoke of Africa!"~ME 1982 Hands of Old Elmer Keith

It is pronounced Hemsbok only because Europeans, not Afrikaners battle to pronounce the guttural g sound. The correct name for this antelope of the red Kalahari dunes is Gemsbok.

Just got back from a hunt near Kimberley RSA - all locals and my PH said quite clearly - gemsbok. Saw many and shot a nice one. Didn't see any "hemsbok" - nor did anyone else, so far as I know. Regards, AIU
