I've booked two hunts through Wendell Reich and have been quite satisfied. Nobody's perfect, and I'm looking around right now for other outfitters, as well. Several booking agents prowl the pages of AR, and you can book directly with an African outfitter, but for your first hunt, it might be a good idea to go through a booking agent to help smooth the way.

I have used both Wendell and Mark and been well treated by both.

King,

Mark and Wendell both enjoy a good rep on this forum and that's not that easy to accomplish. I haven't used either but would if they offered something I needed @ the time.

I have used Jeff Martinell @ luxuryhunts.com who books for Pierre Van Tonder and was pleased with both.

What dangerous game are you after. Any lion, a MGM lion, a really big leopards, the experience of buffalo hunting, a chance at a good 40+ incher, an exceptional elephant, a chance at the big four, a two area collector hunt "come as they may"? This will make a big difference on the area of Tanzania you want to hunt and therefore the outfitter.

May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Brett, my hopes are mature animals that are good reps of each of big four. Although if lion gets uplisted and I can't get it back to the states, I'll pass on that one. Live your dreams, Joe

If they upgrade the Lion, and I have my doubts that they will, you can bet your life that if there's no sport hunting quota the TZ game dept wil remove it from the licence anyway.

In case you need to know more about the TZ licencing system etc, this might be of use: http://www.shakariconnection.c...-selous-reserve.html

Shakari - I sincerely hope you're right, believe me I do! However, when you see all the confidential e-mails that I see from John Jackson at Conservation Force, the amount of opposition to continued lion hunting from the many "CONSERVATION" groups around the world, is staggering. The sentiment seems to be that they are leaning towards recommending the Up-Listing of the lion. I for one will be surprised if it DOESN'T happen.

Just another reason why we all need to continue to support CONSERVATION FORCE, donate money, and help Mr. Jackson fight against the up-listing. He needs our HELP!!

Aaron,

I'm not suggesting it won't happen just that I don't think it's as much of a foregone conclusion as many people seem to think.

My guess is there'll be a lot of oppostition to the proposal and I'd further guess that the opponents will point to Kenya where they don't hunt them and the declining populations there as a good reason not to upgrade them.

There's also the point that the upgrade will only put them into the same catagory as Elephant and Leopard and assuming they still allow a sport hunted quota, it'll simply mean the hunter has to apply for a similar import permit as he would for Elephant and/or Leopard.

I agree that it's a good idea to support JJ and from what I know about the species, I don't think the upgrade is necessary but as long as a sport hunting quota is allowed for as it is with the other two species I mentioned, I don't see it as the end of the world.

Moving onto the US, I think someone said something about USF$WS instigating an instant ban if the upgrade is approved. Frankly, I'm not so sure about that. As long as there's the sport hunting quota, I see no reason why they should treat Lions any different to Leopard and Elephant.

I reckon some people are seeing the USF&WS and their Moz ivory ban and thinking the same thing might happen...... but as I see it, that's a very different kettle of fish.

By no means am I an expert on this and perhaps someone who is will chime in, but I beleive it is automatic. ie. they uplist lions and USF&W automaticly stop importation into the US. Then I believe they would have to legislate to allow importation. Not a favoralbe chance of the happening in this administration with this congress.

From what you're saying I'd go to the Selous. The two outfitters that come to mind with the most/best concessions in the Selous are Luke Samaras (represented by our Wendell Reich) and Tanganyka Wildlife Safaris (not sure who represents them). Both have many quality adjacent blocks that they have held forever and are top quality. The Selous gives an excellent chance at leopard and buffalo. The lion and elephant are a good chance in good concessions. That's my understanding anyways.

Brett,

They only want to raise them to the same catagory as Leopard & Elephant are now and as far as I know, there's no reason to suppose they won't allow a sport hunted quota the same way as they do for the others.

It'll just mean the hunter has to apply for a CITES import licence.

Incidentally, this same question has arisen more than once before.

That said if money is no object and you DO want tops in quality I would speak to Mark Young who represents Safari Trackers about a big four hunt in Masailand. A client of theirs took the big four in 3 days last year and they were all good-suppurlative!!!! Much more expensive than doing it with Samaras in the Selous, but better trophy potential for the lion, leopard, and buffalo.

Shakari - See my response to your post in the thread I started regarding the up-listing of the lion to Appendix 1, its bad news for U.S. lion hunters.

Brett, thanks for the info. I will check them out. In the end, I can live without the lion for now but the ele is a MUST(pun intended).

Joe,

From watching the Tanzania safari scene for a couple of years and hunting there once, I'd recommend Miombo Safaris, Luke Samaras and Adam Clements' Safari Trackers.

I would also call Wendell Reich and John Barth. Respective websites are: www.huntersquest.com www.bigbuffalo.com

Jack Brittingham's TAWICO controls one of the finest lion areas in Tanzania. Rungwa Ikili. If I were to hunt lion again, I would hunt no where else. Chace of success is high and the camps and staff are beyond excellent.

Give a long hard look @ Zuka Safaris. Ryan Weinand is the owner, and they run a first class show. Ask for PH Terry Calavrias. I had the time of my life with him. They hunt DG in the Selous.
