There is so much bullshit online that I would love to know the straight poop. Was he shot in an area without quota allegedly? Obviously he was not likely shot in the national park and I sincerely doubt Zim has any laws against shooting within X km of such a boundary. In short, if there had not been an uproar, would the Zim govt had cared at all about any rule bending re: quota....if that is in fact what happened? Seems to me this is especially true (they would not have cared) given the politicized nature of the area in question. Possible this is being stirred up a bit in Zim and elsewhere to achieve political ends given the land issues that seem to permeate the area historically?
There was a bow permit, and the lion was outside the park. There is no law against shooting collared animals, though its frowned upon. The only thing that made it illegal was the fact the landowner did not have a lion on quota. That is not surprising. The area around there has attracted every corrupt politico and operator since the land invasions. Not far from where Dawie Groenewald would prowl. But the radio collar made an illegal 'quota transfer'impossible. In the end the PH will take the fall and the land 'owner' who's related to a cabinet minister will snivel out the back door.
Sorta what I figured....business as usual in Zim (things being "made legal") but the radio collar on a charismatic animal bringing it all to light. Agree that the PH will take the fall and landowner simply call in a gov't favor. Of course, let's be honest, the PH will probably just buy his license back in short order by lining someone's pocket in parks or higher up. Seem to recall a few years ago someone actually getting busted hunting in a NP (Van Heerden?) and don't think he or his brother are out of business to this day. Hell, there were even people here historically who sang their praises!

Probably closest to the truth as we will ever get - especially as what Ganyana has posted regarding the fines!
