Does anyone know who controls nyampala or who books hunts there now? Is it still a prime area?

Search this forum for nyampala and leopard ridge safaris. The new owners and prices were discussed earlier this year.

Rhyme of the Sheep Hunter
May fordings never be too deep, And alders not too thick; May rock slides never be too steep And ridges not too slick.
And may your bullets shoot as swell As Fred Bear's arrow's flew; And may your nose work just as well As Jack O'Connor's too.
May winds be never at your tail When stalking down the steep; May bears be never on your trail When packing out your sheep.
May the hundred pounds upon you Not make you break or trip; And may the plane in which you flew Await you at the strip.

Swanapoel & Scandrol had it for a number of years. I hunted it with one of my partners back in 1999 after general safari season was over and the local season had started. I always thought it a good area and know it produced quality trophies over many years.

However, my favorite area for hunting in Zambia is the Luangwa Valley, a virtual paradise for hunting. Took my huge, old Lion, who was either the largest or second largest ever taken in Zambia, a #3 Puku with a handgun and a new #1 Chobe Bushbuck w/handgun back in 2004. Also, there are some very good Buff up there along with some very cheeky Ele.

Spent 14 days there and then flew into the Bangwelu swamps for Sitatunga, Tsessebe, Black Lechwe and Common Oribi. Don't pass on the swamp hunt if you can make it. 5 days there should be enough for everything except the Sitatunga, which may or may not show himself to you. Some guys hunt 10 days for him without a glimpse.

In any event, schedule your Kafue Flats Lechwe hunt at the beginning of safari, not the end. Long story but trust me, that's the way to do it.

IMO Zambia is one of the two, Mozambique is the other, best safari destinations in Africa today.
Best of luck to you.

Brett and Lion Hunter; I appreciate your input and after further research it appears some gentleman named Rashid now has the concession along with the Bangweulu swamp and maybe the kafue lechwe areas as well. Jeff Neal is a booking agent. (or was) Thanks again! Adrian

I believe Jeff Neal was a booking agent for Leopard Ridge Safaris the previous lease holders of Nyampala. I don't think he currently books for that concession, but I suppose he would be better to ask than to take my speculation.

Rashid is actually the owner of the concession and has been for many years, as I recall. We met him and his son at his office prior to flying into the concession camp back in 1999. He essentially sub-leases the hunting rights. He has also attended SCI Reno. He is the one who will handle the processing and shipping of your trophies. Or so it used to be.
